10 - Farmer's Blonde by Bradfield - This is very light and refreshing, and if you're a fan of pale ales or are just beginning to dabble in real ale, then you're likely to like this.

9 - Moonshine by Abbeydale - This is another delicious thirst-quenching pale ale, brewed with American hops and carrying a punchy bitterness. It's a great beer from a brewery that never disappoints.

8 - Robustus Lunam by Half Moon - Continuing the lunar theme, this is a tremendous stout, oozing with tracle and coffee flavours. It's the finest of several spectacular dark beers already produced by this young brewery.

7 - York Chocolate Stout by Rudgate - This is arguably the most quintessentially York beer you could imagine. It was created to honour the city's long and proud chocolate-making history. It's a rich warming ale, with an unmissable - but not overwhelming - chocolate body.

6 - Fort Smith by Rooster's - This is an excellent festival IPA, full of bold and fruity hop flavours, but with a slightly lower ABV (five per cent) than some other modern examples.

5 - Joshua Jane by Ilkley - This is a brilliant modern examples of the age-old classic Yorkshire bitter. It's a traditional nut-brown bitter from a consistently-outstanding brewery.

4 - Elland's 1872 Porter - This is a multi-award winning beauty from West Yorkshire, brewed to an 1872 recipe. It's the current Winter Champion Beer of Britain. it has a rich complex flavour, but the brewery describe it having an old port nose with coffee and bitter chocolate on the palate.

3 - Bad Kitty by Brass Castle - This won the top award in 2011 just weeks after the brewery launched, as they blasted their way on to Yorkshire's beer scene. It's a rich, smooth chocolate and vanilla stout and is sensational.

2 - Citra by Great Heck - This is one of Yorkshire's finest pale ales. It's takes its name from the American Citra hop used in the brew, and it's as refreshing, flavoursome and crisp a pale ale as you could hope to find.

1 - Comfortably Numb by BAD Co - This was last year's winner but if anything, it's even better now, the recipe having been slightly fine-tuned. It's bursting with tropical fruity flavours but has a very restrained ABV of 3.8 per cent.
