MAISON CAMPBELL has been recalled by York City from his loan spell with Scunthorpe United.

Campbell has been the understudy to Scunthorpe goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons in the Vanarama National League North, after spells with Marske United and Knaresborough Town earlier in the campaign.

The 20-year-old has gained valuable experience playing in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup competition for Scunthorpe, helping the Iron to wins over Cleethorpes Town and Gainsborough Trinity, but will return to York to provide competition for goalkeeper George Sykes-Kenworthy.

An injury in the pre-match warm-up for Rory Watson in City's Tuesday night visit to FC Halifax Town saw the shot-stopper drop out of the starting eleven and squad.

Sykes-Kenworthy was named as his replacement, as the Minstermen went on to secure a 1-1 draw in the Vanarama National League.

But with Head of Recruitment David Stockdale not currently being considered as part of the playing squad, manager Adam Hinshelwood has opted to activate the recall clause in Campbell's loan contract.

Hinshelwood explained on Tuesday evening: "He’s [Watson] come in and he’s played a lot of games in such a short space of time, so that was a bit of a factor.

“He made a save and got up quickly to try and stop it from going out, and he’s just felt something, a cramping sensation when he’s kicking the ball.

“I felt that him starting would risk it for the team.

“Fair play to him, because he could have carried on, but he put the team first like they are all doing at the moment.

“We’ve got a good squad in there, I really like the atmosphere and I like the way they train. I just want to keep that spirit going.

“I believe because it is a goalkeeper, we can call back.

“It might be a case of recalling our goalkeeper that is out on loan, Maison. Get him back in, which we might have to do now.

“We’re not in a position to take any risks, we’ve got to make sure that all bases are covered and we have to get our very good secretary Lisa on the case. She’ll know the ins and outs of that one!”

Campbell will be available for selection in York's National League clash with Eastleigh on Saturday, April 6 (3pm) at the LNER Community Stadium.
