ADAM HINSHELWOOD saw 'real positives' in his first outing as York City manager, despite suffering a 3-2 defeat to Wealdstone in the Vanarama National League.

A brace from Billy Chadwick wasn't enough to earn York a result in their battle against relegation, with a double from Max Kretzschmar and a first-half header from Jack Cook earning the visitors an important three points.

Hinshelwood was encouraged despite the result, and saw fine margins in the difference between the two sides, relaying the message that York need to turn their performances into results after City dropped into the relegation zone on Saturday.

"I thought that in the first-half there were some really good stuff, some real positives," Hinshelwood admitted.

"We got the ball into the final third really well, but didn't take enough of those opportunities when we got into the final third and some bad decisions and bad technique.

"There were some positives to take, but ultimately we didn't come away with anything from the game so there's still loads for us to work on.

"There were some fine margins as well, looking back at their first goal before half-time it was very close to being offside and Dipo's (Akinyemi) one just after half-time as well, their left-back dropped in and it just borderline didn't go for us on the day.

"We won't blame anything, we'll look at ourselves and where we can be better. There's lots for us to improve on, but there were some encouraging signs as well.

"It's down to us to keep relaying the messages. There was lots to be pleased with, some of the press in the first-half we went after them high up the pitch and turned over the ball a few times, that work rate and intensity was there.

"We just keep relaying that message, there were some positive stuff there for the first game and we want to keep improving on that.

"There was loads for us to work on and we've gone for one or two areas that we can work on, but I thought that it was a relatively good start.

"It was the first game for us and we were pleased and encouraged by a lot of it, but with ten games to go we know that we need to pick up some points.

"Ten games to go, 30 points still to play for.

"That's the message as well to the players, we've got a long way to go and sooner rather than later we have got to turn our performances into points.

"We can look at all of the stats and it looks quite good after a game, but the one main statistic at this point in the season is the fact that they have scored three and we have scored two, we need to turn that around."

Hinshelwood went on to further explain the decision behind Tony McMahon's retention at the club, speaking on the recent transition that saw Neal Ardley depart the club and Hinshelwood join from Worthing.

Hinshelwood said: "Macca has been excellent since we've come in, he's really helped with the transition of us coming in.

"A bit of it is judged on what Macca says, but we've got to see through our own eyes, you can do all you can in training but you learn a lot from what the players do on a matchday. We learned a lot from Saturday's game."
