FORMER York City midfielder Russ Penn is back in management, having signed a long-term deal with Halesowen Town.

Penn, who made a combined 112 appearances with York across two spells, is back in management after leaving Kidderminster Harriers in the Vanarama National League in January.

The 38-year-old was among the bookies' favourites to replace outgoing City manager Neal Ardley, alongside the likes of John Askey, Tony McMahon and Jonathan Woodgate.

Halesowen confirmed this afternoon that manager Paul Smith had decided to step down from his role, instead moving to an advisory position in the backroom staff.

The club have appointed Penn as Smith's successor on a long-term contract, with the York stalwart set to take charge of his first match against Barwell on Saturday, March 2 (3pm).

Director of Football Keith McKenna told the club website: ''Russ has a great pedigree within the game both as a pro, non-league and in management.

"He has a strong affinity with the club, he has worked at very high level in non-league and I am absolutely delighted we could attract  him.

"He is energetic and focussed on what we want to achieve at this football club and I’m sure he will be a great success.

"I’m sure all the fans get right behind him and I personally look forward to working with him. Welcome aboard.''
