DORKING Wanderers chief Marc White believes it was ironic that a stunning late goal handed his side victory at York City on Tuesday evening.

The Minstermen showed early promise, with Harrison Male denying Finlay Barnes and Will Smith inside the opening two minutes, but a Will Davies effort that smacked off the right-hand post shortly after the hour proved the closest that they came to troubling the scoreboard thereafter.

But whilst Tom Blair's last-gasp winner was undoubtedly a stunning finish, questions will likely be asked of just how he was able to advance 35 yards through a seemingly non-existent York defence before seeing his thunderous strike cannon off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Dorking have now won more matches on the road than in front of their home fans, with Tuesday's triumph seeing them move out of the relegation zone and level on points with City.

And White has warned that his part-time side should never be written off.

"How'd you like them apples? That's what I'm saying!" he told DWTV.

"One thing that you should learn about a team that's come as far as us is that you never write us off. Never write us off.

"We planned the game meticulously. To a man, the boys played really well and executed not just one game plan, but two or three. Neal changed his formation a couple of times - it was a bit like chess at points - and the boys got a great result.

"We've got uncanny away form, but it's all about tonight really.

"I think that it was ironic that we scored a winner of quality because we haven't really had that quality all season.

"So many players like Tom Blair have been missing for long periods, that can change games. So it's ironic that he got a brilliant winner."

With both York and Dorking battling to stay above the dotted line, White was pleased with how his side delivered under pressure to bounce back from Saturday's disappointing 3-1 home defeat to FC Halifax Town.

"That win was what we're all about as a team," he explained. "We've still got loads more work to do, and we've got to go again on Saturday, but in terms of what has been achieved off the back of Saturday's result, today ticked all the boxes.

"I thought the victory was all about the players tonight. There were battles all over the pitch, and it was hard to pick out individuals.

"To a man, they played well. On Monday, we were talking about what they were going to do, and they delivered it. They delivered it under pressure, away from home, in the relegation zone for the first time since we've been in this division, and they delivered it.

"This 'relegation battle' is going to go on until the last five games probably, it's a tough, tough league. We'll just enjoy tonight."

He also praised the 99 Dorking supporters who made the journey to North Yorkshire for the twice-rearranged fixture.

White added: "The fans coming up here, they really deserve to be buzzing all the way back.

"If you don't follow Wanderers and think that it's not a great time then more fool you, because we deliver a great time when you least expect it.

"I can't guarantee a part-time club success with where it is at this stage - there are so many things off the pitch that we need to do and build - but what I can guarantee is that we'll be the last men standing trying. You saw that tonight.

"I'm over the moon for the fans that came here, those who came from the north, those that came all the way up from Dorking, they won't care about how long it takes to get home now.

"I've had so much support since Saturday because people love Dorking Wanderers, people get Dorking Wanderers. They know that we are not entitled to be playing all the teams that we've played in the last two years."
