OXFORD City boss Ross Jenkins admits his side are chomping at the bit to return to Vanarama National League action against York City this evening (7:45pm).

Similar to the Minstermen, Oxford have not taken to the field in over two weeks, owing to their exit from the Isuzu FA Trophy and the early postponement of Saturday’s fixture at Woking.

Only kept off the bottom of the table by Kidderminster Harriers, the Hoops head into the match off the back of one win in their last seven matches, a stark contrast to City’s unbeaten run during that time.

But Jenkins hopes that extra work on the training ground will have proved beneficial for his side.

“The Woking game (being postponed) was frustrating, as all the boys want to play games,” he told the club.

“We had a good week of training leading up to the game, but that’s football.

“But if anything it’s allowed us to give one or two players a few more days training and rest. It’s had its pros and cons.

“We’ve had 17 days off, and that’s a long time, so the boys are really keen to play games. There’s only so much training you can do, you need the realism of a game.

“We have things we need to work on, which we’ve done this week and hopefully we can see that in the games that are coming up.”

Tyler Cordner's stunner and a debut goal from Will Davies saw York run out comfortable 2-0 winners at the LNER Community Stadium in November, and Jenkins is expecting his side to face another difficult test this evening.

“York is a big club with a big fan base, and Neal Ardley has them working in a good manner, so it’s going to be a difficult game.

“From the match up at their place, in the first half, I don’t think we were good enough. We sat off them a little bit too much and we were a little bit passive.

“In the second half, we were better. Our football showed and we started to move the ball much better and tried to control the game a little bit more, which hopefully we can do at home.

“Now, it’s a good opportunity to play at home, put a good performance on, and hopefully get a good result.”
