FORMER York City striker Macaulay Langstaff has become the first player to reach 20 goals in the EFL this season.

The Notts County star brought up the milestone in Saturday’s 10-goal thriller at Grimsby Town, scoring in the opening minute of first-half stoppage time to level the scores at two apiece at the interval.

It is the latest in a long line of achievements for the former City striker, who scored 11 times in 52 appearances for the Minstermen between 2018 and 2020.

Last term, he broke the record for the most goals scored across a Vanarama National League season, netting an incredible 42 goals in 45 appearances as the Magpies were promoted via the Play-offs after running eventual champions Wrexham close for most of the season.

That also saw him become Notts County’s record goal scorer across a single season - breaking Tom Keetley’s 92-year club record in the process.

Some questioned whether the 26-year-old could emulate those levels in Sky Bet League Two, but he has proved to be able to do just that.

He currently averages a goal every 117 minutes, and has converted a quarter of the 83 total shots that he has taken.

Langstaff’s 20 league goals this term is four more than on-loan Swindon Town star Jake Young, who has since returned to parent club Bradford City, and double that of Wrexham’s Paul Mullin, who notched 38 National League goals last term.

Blackburn Rovers' Sammie Szmodics and Charlton Athletic's Alfie May currently top the Sky Bet Championship and Sky Bet League One scoring charts with 16 goals apiece.
