YORK City boss Neal Ardley admits that he is not sure that the club have a first-choice goalkeeper.

City currently have four goalkeepers on their roster, with the summer signings of former Premier League shot-stopper and local talent Rory Watson adding to the retained Ryan Whitley and Maison Campbell.

Watson was given his first run out as a lacklustre City drew 0-0 with Southern League Premier Division Central high-fliers Needham Market on Saturday, having been behind both Stockdale and Whitley in the pecking order.

37-year-old Stockdale, who joined the Minstermen after helping Sheffield Wednesday gain promotion to the Sky Bet Championship last season, began the season as the first-choice, but has not featured since sustaining a knock in their 1-1 draw with Altrincham in August.

Youngsters Whitley and Campbell were loaned out to Vanarama National League North side Scarborough Athletic and the Pitching In Northern Premier League premier division's Marske United respectively, with Stockdale's injury forcing the former back just a handful of games into his tenure at the Flamingo Land Stadium.

But a string of questionable performances had left City fans calling for the 23-year-old to be replaced by Watson, who did himself no harm against Needham, despite being left with relatively little to do.

Asked whether Watson's performance was enough to see him start tomorrow's replay at Needham, and indeed take over the number one spot, Ardley replied: "Looking at goalkeepers, I'm not sure that I've got a first choice if I'm honest.

"David Stockdale's beginning to edge back out onto the training field, so it's a position that we're looking closely at.

"You've got a little bit of strength and depth and you're trying to work it out.

"It's like we've got Scott Burgess, he couldn't get a look-in early on because of the players. But when some aren't delivering, I had a look at Scotty when he came off the bench, he trained well, did great off the bench and now I'm having a look to see whether he can regularly fit into the way that we want to do things.

"I think that Rory's been given an opportunity, now let's see."

Ardley also confirmed that changes would be likely for tomorrow's replay after City's below-par performance on Saturday.

The Minstermen were unable to name their full complement of substitutes due to a mix of injuries and loan unavailability, but both Callum Howe and Paddy McLaughlin could be back in contention for the trip to Suffolk.

But Ardley remained cautious, not wanting to run the risk of further injuries with City travelling to both Eastleigh and Chesterfield over the next week.

"Paddy had a slight groin injury from the Bromley game, but also he's got a slight Achilles [injury] which sometimes causes his groin," Ardley confirmed. "But he trained today.

"We've got to see whether he's ready just to go straight back into 90 [minutes], especially with the games that we've got coming up.

"But both him and Callum Howe trained today, so that's quite refreshing to have more options, because there's one or two niggles out there."

Two players unlikely to feature for the Minstermen however are Mitch Hancox and Scott Barrow, who were named on the bench on Saturday, with Ardley feeling that the pair need more game time behind closed doors before being introduced back into first-team action.

"It's difficult for them both," Ardley conceded.

"Scott, he's come back from a long-term injury. He needs a game, but he probably needs a behind closed doors game for him to get his fitness up and try and get himself to the next level.

"It's the same with Mitch, he hasn't played for a long, long time.

"They were on the bench because they are a part of the squad and we needed a squad on Saturday because we had a lot of injuries.

"We've got some players back, so we analyse who goes on the bench and who travels, but it's difficult because they haven't had that much playing time.

"It's very difficult for them to go into the demands that I'm throwing at the others."
