YORK City assistant manager Neil Cox is relishing the upcoming Emirates FA Cup weekend.

Cox’s side have been entered the competition in the fourth qualifying due to their position in the footballing pyramid, and have been drawn against seventh tier outfit Needham Market.

Needham Market have so far overcame FC Romania, Hashtag United and Vanarama National League North side Peterborough Sports to reach this stage of the competiton, defeating the latter 3-0 in the replay following a goalless draw.

The Marketmen have also enjoyed a highly-successful start to their season in the Southern Premier Division Central and find themselves in second position.

Cox is now relishing the upcoming tie, which is set to take place on Saturday, October 14 (3pm) at the LNER Community Stadium.

“I’ve seen Peterborough this year so I expected it to be them, but Needham have had a great result.” Cox admitted.

“Obviously it went to a replay and they won 3-0, we’ve had paperwork through already and we’ll send someone to go watch them and do our own work.

“This is the FA Cup, anything can happen and we want to reach the next round of the FA Cup.

“I do remember Keith Houchen all of those years ago in the FA Cup!

“The FA Cup is important to all of us, we got brought up on the FA Cup, the fans love the FA Cup.

“You never know where you’re going to end up, you could easily get to the fifth round of the FA Cup and draw somebody at home, you never know.”

Cox might be assistant manager to Neal Ardley at York, but also has previous experience in the hotseat himself, at boyhood club Scunthorpe United.

The City assistant was over the moon to see his former side receive a takeover in recent days, after a consortium purchased the club from former owner David Hilton.

The news could also see Scunthorpe remain at their home stadium Glanford Park, with Cox telling the Press that he does not want to see another Bury scenario repeated, after the Shakers dissolved in 2020.

“It’s great news! Obviously the football club has been through a lot since I was there, they had a takeover then and now they’ve had another takeover.

“It’s not only Scunthorpe but it’s good for all of these clubs, and hopefully Southend can get some really good news and there’s goes through, which it looks like it will do.

“We don’t want anymore Bury’s.”
