FORMER York City manager Neil Thompson has taken up the caretaker manager position at a Sky Bet Championship club.

Following a dismal start to the season for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, the Owls have made the decision to part ways with manager Xisco Munoz.

Munoz’s first match in the charge of Wednesday came in a pre-season friendly with York, which saw City hold out for a 1-1 draw after a second-half strike from Finlay Barnes.

Whilst Sheffield Wednesday continue their search for a new manager, former City boss and player Thompson has been placed in temporary charge.

Thompson first arrived at York in 1998 on a short-term loan deal from Oldham Athletic, making 12 appearances and scoring two goals, before earning a permanent stay.

The defender would go on to have a two year stint in North Yorkshire and making 30 appearances, scoring six goals before going onto have spells with Scarborough and Boston United.

In Thompson’s second year as a permanent City player, he was hired as a first-team coach before taking up the managerial position in a dual role, managing 45 matches and maintaining a win percentage of 24.4 per cent.

Thompson’s time in charge resulted in 11 wins, 11 draws and 23 defeats.

After going onto gain experience in management with Scarborough and Boston, Thompson would join Leeds United’s reserve coaching staff, before replacing Tony Pulis as Wednesday manager on a caretaker basis.

Thompson also currently manages the Owl’s under-23’s side, but will take charge of first-team affairs until a new permanent manager is installed.
