THE Shrimpers Trust will present York City with a plaque at their clash with Southend United on Saturday (3pm).

In commemoration of the club's fundraising efforts earlier this year, the design shows a blue hand shaking hands with a red hand and the words "Southend United and York City United".

At the bottom of the plaque, an engraving reads: "The supporters of Southend United FC thank all at York City FC who gave so generously to help our off-field staff in 2023."

No details on its exact presentation have been revealed, though the Shrimpers Trust hope that it will be given on the pitch at the LNER Community Stadium.

In a post on social media, the Shrimpers Trust said: "Whilst there is no end in sight to our off the field struggles, we want to recognise those helping us.

"On Saturday we will present a gift to @ycfcst & @YorkCityFC as a gesture of thanks for their support and generosity to our hardship fund.

"@matt_uggla Thank you!"

Bucket collections were held at the Minstermen's home pre-season friendlies against Sky Bet Championship outfit Middlesbrough and Sky Bet League Two's Doncaster Rovers in July, raising a total of  £1,914.14 for the Shrimpers' Trust Hardship Fund, used to pay staff at Southend should they need it amid the club's ownership crisis.

City chairman Matt Uggla added to that total by £10,000, taking the total raised by City to just short of £12,000.

Due to the clubs' relationship, Uggla also admitted that he would not approach Southend boss Kevin Maher during York's managerial search earlier this month.

Fans of both clubs have shown their support for the news, with one commenting: "That's brilliant. Whatever else happens this season our friendship will endure. Kindness is the thing. @matt_uggla #ycfc".

Others wrote "Something so simple yet means sooo much to both sets of fans! What a lovely gesture," and "Can’t be there - sadly. Well done Shrimpers Trust and thank you @matt_uggla and your supporters - your generosity won’t be forgotten."

David Stockdale, City's goalkeeper and head of recruitment retweeted the message with two clapping hands emojis.

Southend are the only side below York in the Vanarama National League table thanks to a 10-point deduction, with the Minstermen keen to secure their first win under Neal Ardley when the sides meet in a crucial bottom-of-the table clash on Saturday.

Both sides earned draws against Boreham Wood and 10-man FC Halifax Town respectively last weekend.
