YORK City have appointed Neil Cox to become assistant manager to recently-appointed Neal Ardley.

Ardley, who confirmed this afternoon that the club had held talks with Cox, boasts previous experience with the assistant, after working together at both AFC Wimbledon and Notts County.

Cox also has managerial experience himself, having previously worked as first-team manager for both Leek Town and Scunthorpe United, when the Iron were in Sky Bet League Two.

Ardley also confirmed this afternoon that Tony McMahon would be staying with the club, with the York coach impressing Ardley in training.

McMahon was previously assistant to former boss Michael Morton and took interim charge in the 4-1 defeat to Ebbsfleet United last Saturday.

“That’s something we’re working on, it’s been a rush trying to get it over the line and get Neil in the building.

"Hopefully that’s getting sorted out today.

"Neil lives local and is an hour away, it’s a very easy decision for me to work with someone I’ve had lots of success with and I’ve been friends with for 30 years.

"He’s also friends with Tony Mac, they know each other really well.

"From the outside people can criticise, he got beat 4-1 last week, from what I’ve seen Tony is very good and very thorough.

"At the end of the day, I’ve said to all of the staff to sit back and let me try to take the first couple of weeks.

"See what I want, see what I expect from the players, I did the same with James Quinn at Solihull.

"Then they can really step in and start coaching. I’ve worked with Neil Cox and Simon Bassey at Wimbledon and they were great, Simon I didn’t know before but we’re good friends now.

"James Quinn at Solihull, didn’t know him, came in and worked with him and he’s a great coach so we’re good friends now.

"I’m the sort of guy where if someone is good, then I’ll work with them all day and I’ll treat them how they want to be treated.

"I’m comfortable either way, it’ll be great to get Neil over the line."

Cox also spoke on the move, saying: “It’s another big challenge for me, looking forward to coming back in.

“We’ve worked together and had success at other clubs where we’ve been to, I can’t wait to get started.

“I know how the manager wants to play; we’ve been friends for a long time, but we’ve worked together a long time too.

“We’re here to try and do a really good job for this football club.”

“I’ve been out the game a long time now, but I’ve been to more games now than I ever have been.

“I’ll be a calmer influence now than I was when I was first in a manager’s job.

“You learn a lot when you’re out of work because you see things more, everything’s a little bit clearer.”

Having had two days with the squad so far, Cox believes there’s a lot in there but work still has to be done.

“There’s a lot of positives, they’re just lacking a bit of confidence at the moment, and that was our job in the first two days by getting some confidence back into them.

“Next week will be a big week for them all because they’re going to get to know us a bit better, how we want to train, and how we are going to train.

“The tempo between Thursday to Friday increased, so we’re hoping to get a good kickstart on Saturday."
