MICHAEL MORTON is vying for York City to pick up their first three points of the season against Aldershot Town on Saturday, August 19 (3pm).

After starting the season with back-to-back losses against Wealdstone and Kidderminster Harriers, York grasped their first point of the Vanarama National League campaign with a 2-2 draw against Altrincham on Tuesday night.

Morton is now hoping that City can go one step further and clinch their first victory of the season, albeit against a ‘tough’ Aldershot outfit.

“The main thing is that we are trying to get points on the board.” Morton admitted.

“We know that they are a tough side, it’s a tough place to go and we’ve got a bit of work to do to see where we can exploit some of their weaknesses.

“We know we’re in a process, we need to pick points up and keep up with that chase. We know we need to pick up three points at the weekend.

“I think they’re sort of similar situation to us, they’ve got a lot of new signings and you can see they’re trying to put the pieces together.

“They’ve been in the games we’ve seen, Oldham scored a couple of really good goals and looking at the game there isn’t a big difference between them.

“They’re an experienced side, they’ve got a good manager and are similar to us in terms of trying to get people to fit the shape and trying to get up to fitness.

“We’re just hoping we can go and edge that on Saturday.

“They’re more knowing that we aren’t at our best with the defensive stuff, but I think it’ll be an entertaining game.

“You watch how he’s (Tommy Widdrington, Aldershot manager) managed the other clubs before and he’s quite forward-thinking.

“We’ll be open and they’ll be open, I think it’ll be like the game the other night with both teams going for it.

“It won’t be good for my ticker, but we want to be exciting and on the front foot, we want to cause problems and I think they want to cause problems as well.

“We’ve just got to map it out, we’ve been alright because we’ve got Saturday to Saturday now, it’s not ideal when you’re playing Saturday to Tuesday.

“We’ll get more minutes in everybody this weekend, then we’ve got a week where we can do two days of conditioning work to get them up to speed, then we can have a couple of days to bring it back down before we play again.

“The more minutes they get, they’ll get sharper and we should be able to sustain what we want to achieve for each game.

“We probably should be at our best in three to four weeks.

“It’s just a little bit of work in terms of defensive actions, so a little bit of stuff that we need to do.

“That also comes from playing together, that back four have not played together at all so we’re going to have those teething problems.

“You look at Alty and the way they attack, they can exploit spaces quickly and can score goals against a back line that have been playing together for many years.

“I thought we did a lot of good stuff but just switched off, it’s a process for us.”

Morton is also expecting Tyler Cordner to perform on his return to Aldershot, after completing his Summer switch to North Yorkshire for an undisclosed fee.

“It’s good to go back, the fans love him there and I think he’s got a good relationship with the players.

“It’ll be good for him, I think he needs to be focused and hopefully he can score one from a set-play, which will be nice.

“It’s always good to go back when you leave on good terms.”
