YORK City manager Michael Morton is 'really looking forward' to the Minstermen's Vanarama National League season opener against Wealdstone tomorrow afternoon.

The York boss admitted that he and his players are raring to go after travelling to Wealdstone today, but are expecting a tricky match against Stuart Maynard's side.

Morton also issued a message to supporters ahead of the beginning of the season, and admitted he was looking forward to a bright future under the Uggla families ownership in the club, with plenty of positivity going on behind-the-scenes.

“I’m really looking forward to it and I think the lads are as well." Morton enthused to the Press.

"We’ve really pushed the lads, not just in pre-season but in the off-season.

"Their attitude to be as fit as they can be has been very good, I think you can see how we want to play and how it is different from last year.

"What we’ve got to do now is keep to our methodology and keep pushing, and keep doing what we can to be better.

"The only stumbling block is that we brought some players in a little bit later into pre-season than we wanted to, but we want to strengthen the squad and we’re happy to have them on board to get them to full fitness.

“I think it’s a really tricky game.

"If you look at Stuart [Maynard, Wealdstone manager] and his team, everybody knows that they are a really good footballing side.

"They’re set-up in a really good way, they’re organised, they’re a really good side.

"They might be a part-time side but they look like a professional side, in terms of how they set-up and what they do, and that’s a credit to Stuart and his team.

"In terms of their sort of recruitment, I think they’ve recruited well, they’ve brought some good players in from around this league. But any team who are like that and are organised are going to be a difficult side.

“It’s been unbelievable, since the first chat I had with Matt, Julie-Anne has been brilliant and they’ve got a really good eye in terms of the business.

"I think with where Matt has been at, he really wants to take this club forward but he knows what type of stuff needs to be done behind-the-scenes.

"I think they’re moving as quick as they can on some things and there’s a lot of good stuff going on behind-the-scenes.

"There’s still a lot to do and we can’t do it overnight, but with me being a York lad and York fan, being in this position, it’s just really exciting times for the club moving forward.

“I said it last year and I am probably like a broken record, but I mean every word of it.

"I think the fans are absolutely top drawer, there’s not many better fans around and especially not at this level of football, they travel in their numbers and there’s a really good sort of buzz around the players.

"If it wasn’t for them fans last year then we would have been struggling, they hold us together and it’s like an us against the world sort of mentality."
