YORK City have added some firepower to their frontline with the addition of Dipo Akinyemi, for an undisclosed fee.

Akinyemi joins York after a spell in Scotland with Ayr United, after netting 20 goals and seven assists in the Scottish Championship last season.

The 26-year-old won the PFA Scottish Championship player-of-the-season in his first year in Scotland, after originally regularly playing in England throughout his career.

As revealed by Daily Record in January, Ayr turned down a deal worth £240,000 from an unnamed Sky Bet League One side for Akinyemi, with Sky Bet League Two outfit Gillingham also rumoured to have been interested in the forward this Summer, so his move to the Minstermen is expected to be a hefty fee.

The forward becomes City's 12th addition of the Summer, after Michael Morton had already brought in the likes of Tyler Cordner, Callum Howe and David Stockdale previously.

Speaking on his move to the club, Akinyemi said: “I’m happy to be here.

“It happened pretty quickly, I spoke to Dave [Stockdale] and there’s a lot of ambition in the club at the moment with the new owner coming in.

“It looks like the club wants to go in the right direction.”
