TRIBUTES are flooding in for York RLFC legend Peter Foster, who has sadly passed away aged 96.
Peter is highly-regarded as one of York Knights' greatest-ever players, having played for the club from 1955 to 1967.
Having first pulled on the shirt aged 22, he would stay at Clarence Park for a further 12 years.
Peter made an astonishing 338 appearances in a York shirt, scoring an incredible 169 tries in that period, making history for his boyhood club.
In March 2015, the winger's remarkable contributions to the club saw him added to the York RLFC Hall of Fame, where he was inducted alongside Mick Ramsden, Danny Sheehan, Dave Dunkerley and Thomas Moore.
Away from his life in rugby league, Peter was a much loved husband of the late Della, loving dad of David, Dennis and the late Wendy and Sue, and a dear grandpa of Abigail, Jack, Emma and Amy.
Tributes have been flooding in, with York RLFC writing: "Everyone at York RLFC is saddened to hear of the passing of our past player and Hall of Famer, Peter Foster.
"Between 1955 and 1967, he proudly wore the York jersey over 300 times and scored 169 tries for the club - he'll always be a part of our history.
"Our thoughts are with Peter’s family and friends at this time."
Gary Hall wrote on social media: "The York rugby league family is mourning the loss of Peter Foster, a player whose name has long been spoken with admiration, affection, and pride.
"Between 1955 and 1967, Peter became one of the club’s true greats, pulling on the York jersey 351 times and scoring an astonishing 169 tries — a record that still stands today.
"More than his statistics, Peter was remembered for the way he played: fearless and determined.
"His induction into the York RL Hall of Fame recognised not just his achievements, but the lasting impact he made on the club and its supporters.
"Peter’s passing leaves a sadness, but his legacy remains bright.
"He will be remembered not only as a record‑breaker, but as a gentleman of the game, and a treasured part of York RLFC history."
Peter's funeral service to be held at Maple Park Crematorium Thirsk on Wednesday, August 5 at 11:30am.
Family flowers are welcomed, with donations in lieu if desired to Leukaemia Research, where a plate will be provided at the service.
