STUART Maynard wants York City fans to be the team’s “12th man” during tomorrow’s Yorkshire derby with Barnsley.
The sides will meet at Oakwell in the first round of the FA Cup, with City again drawn against League One opposition in the famous trophy.
Tickets for the clash have been flying off the shelves, with York confirming that 2,560 tickets had been sold, as of 3.15pm on Friday afternoon.
And the impact of such support isn’t lost on Maynard, who hopes to see that figure rise to 3,000 before kick-off.
“We’re going to need the fans massively in a game like this,” said the City boss.
“They’re a League One opposition, and we’ve talked about how good they are. We need our 12th man.
“If we can get to that 3,000 mark, it would be absolutely incredible.
“The fans, home and away, this season have been unreal, and Saturday, to experience the Yorkshire derby at Halifax, was incredible.
“When that [Mark] Kitching goal was disallowed - which shouldn’t have been disallowed - the scenes of celebration and noise they made was incredible.
“We’re going to need that on Saturday, and if we could get to that 3,000 mark, it would be incredible.”
The Minstermen booked their spot in the first round of the competition with a 2-1 win at National League leaders Rochdale earlier this month.
Alex Newby struck twice for the visitors - either side of a Mani Dieseruvwe goal - in a game that sparked into life in the second half.
It will be Barnsley’s first FA Cup tie this season, and one in which they will hope to rediscover their winning formula.
Despite a bright start to the campaign, Conor Hourihane’s side have dropped off the boil, their last league win coming against Reading back in mid-September.
