FORMER York City striker Macaulay Langstaff was presented with the Sky Bet League Two Golden Boot this weekend after a fruitful debut season in the sport’s fourth tier.

Langstaff, who scored 11 times in 52 appearances for the Minstermen between 2018 and 2020, picked up the award after netting 28 goals, four clear of both Wrexham marksman Paul Mullin and Salford City’s Matt Smith.

The flamboyant forward received the trophy on Saturday as his Notts County side closed out the season with a 1-0 defeat at relegated Forest Green Rovers, earning them a 14th-placed finish.

He finished the season with 28 goals and six assists to his name, averaging a goal every 144 minutes (0.63 per match), and converting 21 per cent of his 131 total shots, of which he had a shot accuracy of 53 per cent.

That return included six braces, and his first EFL hat-trick in a 5-0 thrashing of Morecambe in December, and also earned him a place in the League Two Team of the Season at the EFL’s awards evening a fortnight ago.

Those are the latest in a long line of achievements for the 27-year-old, who broke the Vanarama National League’s goalscoring record last season after netting an incredible 42 times in 45 appearances as the Magpies were promoted via the play-offs.

Remarkably, not one of those goals came from the penalty spot.

Langstaff, who had been favourite to claim the Golden Boot at 6/1, told the EFL: “To have finished my first season in the EFL as League Two’s top scorer is a really proud achievement.

“A lot of people told me that the gap between the National League and League Two wasn’t that big, but I disagree – I think it’s a noticeably higher standard, so to have outscored everyone else in the division is brilliant.

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to my teammates, the staff and fans for all their brilliant support.”
