DAVID WEBB has said he understands the frustration of the York City supporters after his side were booed off the field in the 3-0 home defeat to Gateshead.

York fell to a dire defeat in Webb’s first match on the touchline as manager, following recent illness.

Two Danny Elliott penalties and a Owen Bailey strike saw the previously second-from-bottom Gateshead take a well-deserved in a one-sided Vanarama National League affair.

“We have to take that, I understand the fans’ frustration,” Webb said on the boos that rang around the LNER Community Stadium at full time.

“They paid their money and they want to see a better performance. It’s our job to go and rectify that.

“We have to rectify it very quickly because we go again against the same team on Sunday (3pm). We have to work very hard in training to rectify that.

“I’ve spoke to the lads. I’m not here to single anyone out. We take it as a whole team performance and we live and die by the team.

“We have to take responsibility as manager and coaches for our decisions, the players have to take (responsibility) for their part and we’ll do everything together as a team to try and heal and get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.”

Webb, who took charge of his maiden match as a first-team manager, is aware of the immediate criticism he will receive after such a start.

“We all have to take responsibility for that, I’m not singling anyone out,” he added. “I, as the manager, have to take the brunt of that, I understand that.

“I have to lead the group and we have to go again and that starts from training on Wednesday.

“It’s not just the players, it’s about all of us as a group.”
