Summer can bring about plenty of positive changes with warmer weather, but it can cause issues as well, such as with your bins.
As temperatures slowly creep up, it can cause kitchen bins to start emitting unwanted odours.
However, with a bit of preparation and foresight, you can avoid these unpleasant smells and ensure your kitchen is a pleasant place to be in the summer months.
A number of cleaning experts have shared some easy tips that you can follow to make it happen.
How to stop your bins from smelling in hot weather
Take your bins out more frequently
One easy step to prevent bad smells from your bins in the summer months is just to take them out more regularly.
The home cleaning company method recommends emptying your bin every couple of days, especially if you’ve just thrown away anything "particularly pungent".
They add: "If you’re dealing with food waste, consider getting a compost bin to separate out organic scraps and reduce bink stink altogether."
Deodorise your bin using baking soda
One way to limit bad smells is to use an ordinary household item in baking soda.
Ryan Kaila, waste and recycling expert from Kingfisher Direct, says: "Baking soda is a household item that can be used to reduce foul smells in the bin, simply sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda in the bottom of the bin before placing a new bin liner in.
"Baking soda is effective in neutralising odour molecules in the air so it will prevent foul odours. For the baking soda to work effectively, always wash your bin thoroughly beforehand”.
Keep your bins in the shade
Keeping your bins in the shade can reduce the level of heat they absorb, reducing the chances of horrid smells.
Michael Bogoyavlenskiy, CEO of Cleaning Express, says: "First, try to keep your bins in the shade if you can, as this’ll limit how hot they get. If it’s not possible to move them, consider building a bin storage area that provides some shade."
He also recommends double-bagging particularly smelly items, such as fish packaging, in old bread bags or something similar.
Sprinkle in scented products
Baking soda can be great at absorbing bad smells, and certain scented products can also battle against it.
Scented bin liners and bin fresheners are popular choices, while anti-bac sprays, such as method's all-purpose cleaner, can be applied to a bin before adding a liner.

Keep your bin dry
Moisture is a breeding ground for bacteria, which causes bad odours, so keeping your bin dry is one way to avoid those sorts of smells.
If you notice condensation inside your bin, be sure to wipe it down with a microfibre towel before adding a new liner.
Alongside this, the method adds: "Another handy trick? As well as lining your bins, be sure to dispose of any food waste in sealed containers to prevent the buildup of unwanted residue at the bottom of your bin.
"This simple step can go a long way in keeping things fresh and reducing unwanted smells."
