LET’S be clear from the off: Brilliant is the name of the album, not a rating. If it was, it might have been called “All Right” or “Yeah Not Bad I Suppose” or “There Are A Few Decent Songs On Here And Old Ultravox Fans Will Probably Love It But Not Sure It’s Gonna Be In My CD Player All That Long”.

Either way, it’s the first album from Midge Ure and co for a whopping 26 years. (That’s a long time to live off royalties from the ultimate guilty pleasure, Vienna.) To be fair, it’s a valid return. It’s also fair to say their sound hasn’t changed much in the intervening time: spacey synths aligned to guitars and sizeable choruses to recreate Eighties electro rock-pop.

One is the closest to a Vienna-like cinematic atmosphere, while Rise is among the better tracks – but the line “I’ve come… to give you all the things you need”, like the album title, is a tad overconfident.
