A driver more than three times the legal alcohol limit went to the same petrol station as police officers, York magistrates heard.
Amanda Pullin, prosecuting, said Joshua Harvey, 34, attracted the officers’ attention because he was unsteady on his feet.
They went up to him and persuaded him not to leave the Inner Space service station on Hull Road, York.
They also gave him a breath test.
When he failed it, they arrested him and took him to Fulford Road Police Station.
A second breath test gave a reading of 114 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.
The legal limit is 35.
Salesman Harvey, of Wood Street, Heworth, pleaded guilty to drink driving, his first criminal conviction.

Magistrates told him that it was a very high reading and he was very lucky that he hadn’t caused a crash or injured anyone.
They banned him from driving for two years and ordered him to pay a total of £1,429 consisting of a £960 fine, a £384 statutory surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.
For him, Robert Hardy said he was remorseful for his actions which were a one-off.
