TRIBUTES have been paid to an award-winning popular butcher.

Brian Glaves, who with his wife, Doreen, established the award-winning BW & DJ Glaves Butchers in Brompton by Sawdon, in the early 1970s, passed away on Monday aged 88.

A spokesperson for Glaves family said: "It is with great sadness to say that on Monday 28th September, Brian passed away,

"The Glaves family would like to express our thanks to Dr Lomboert at Snainton Surgery,

"Everyone on The Enhanced Care Unit at Scarborough Hospital and finally all our staff who have been amazing holding everything together these last few days .R.I.P Brian."

Brian's lifelong Cricket Team, Brompton C.C, said: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our club president, Brian Glaves.

"Brian played for Brompton for many years and throughout this time played a crucial role at Brompton working through every job possible, from groundsman right through to club captain to eventually, when his playing days were over, president of Brompton CC.

"Brian was an incredible ambassador for village cricket and supported the club immensely for decades and without his contributions on and off the field, Brompton wouldn’t be the club we are today.

"Not only was Brian a vital part of our club he was an integral part of our village community and Brompton simply will not be the same without him."

A spokesperson for The Royal Smithson Club, which works to promote quality livestock for the British meat industry, said: "The Club is saddened to learn of the death of Brian Glaves who passed away on 28th September.

"Together with his wife, Doreen, Brian established the award-winning BW & DJ Glaves Butchers in Brompton by Sawdon, Scarborough in the early 1970s, eventually expanding with an impressive new abattoir, lairage, boning room and chiller. Brian and Doreen’s sons James and Antony joined the business and continue its success.

"Elected a Vice President in 2006, and serving as Club President in 2008, Brian was a tremendous supporter of the Festival of Meat at Smithfield Market without whom the event would not have been made possible.

"He was also very much front and centre at Earl’s Court making the carcase displays work so well. Brian was a great supporter of the Smithfield auction, purchasing lambs every year to sell to his many customers throughout Yorkshire.

"Brian judged the Shortwool sheep in 1986 and the overall sheep championship in 1991. Exhibiting in the sheep section, he was Overall Champion in 1992.

"In his Presidential year, he hosted the Club’s Members’ Country Weekend where delegates were able to view his farming and butchery enterprises and enjoy the hospitality provided by him and his family.

"The Club extends its sincere condolences to all family and friends."

Brian's funeral arrangements will follow later.
