A popular York venue is set to host a special screening of Baz Luhrmann's acclaimed Romeo + Juliet as part of a global tour marking the film's 30th anniversary.

York Barbican will welcome the event on October 21, 2027, as part of the William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert tour.

It will feature a live musical performance alongside the full film, with a hybrid ensemble of rock and orchestral musicians performing the score in real time.

The event forms part of a wider UK tour presented by Communion One and GEA Live in collaboration with Disney Concerts and Baz Luhrmann.

The tour will also visit Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Birmingham, and Manchester.

Baz Luhrmann, director of the original 1996 film, said: "One of the greatest surprises over the past three decades has been watching Romeo + Juliet find new audiences again and again.

"That's the enduring magic of Shakespeare and cinema.

"This concert celebrates both, while inviting audiences around the world to experience the film's emotion, music, and theatricality in a completely new way."

The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, is known for its bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s tragedy and its iconic 1990s soundtrack, featuring tracks such as Kissing You by Des'ree and Lovefool by The Cardigans.
