A RISING Commonwealth Games athlete from York is set to launch a community sports weekend in the city.
Abi Miller, a professional cyclist riding for Team England in Glasgow, will help kick off a weekend of free sporting activities at Better leisure centres across the city beginning on Saturday, July 18.
Ms Miller, who competes in both track and road cycling, is the youngest member of the nation's women’s endurance cycling squad and will make her Commonwealth Games debut in Scotland, which begin on July 23.
She is a first-year member of the UAE Development Team and her palmarès already includes junior world and European track titles plus an elite‑level road win in May 2026.

Natalie Thomas, York community sports manager for Greenwich Leisure Limited, which operates the Better centres, said: "We're delighted to be partnering with Team England to celebrate the 2026 Commonwealth Games by giving local people the chance to try something new for free.
"Whether you've always wanted to learn a new sport, get back into exercise, or simply enjoy an active day out with family and friends, there's something for everyone across the weekend.
"We hope as many local residents as possible will come along, have a go, and discover what's available at their local Better leisure centre."
Ms Miller will take part in a 'beat the cyclist' challenge at Energise Leisure Centre in Cornlands Road, Acomb, where visitors can compete against her in a timed spin bike event.
The event is part of Better’s partnership with Team England for the National Sports Weekend, a two-day programme of free and low-cost activities inspired by the Commonwealth Games and designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to get active.
The weekend is open to both members and non-members and aims to showcase the range of sports and facilities available at Better centres.
Participating venues include Burnholme Sports Centre, Energise Leisure Centre, Yearsley Swimming Pool, and York Leisure Centre.
The programme includes running and walking netball taster sessions in partnership with England Netball, a Basketball 3 versus 3 tournament hosted by York Jorviks, and a variety of fitness classes such as strength and conditioning, circuits, and spin.
Visitors can also try out introductory gym sessions for adults and juniors, with staff on hand to demonstrate equipment and give fitness advice.
Additional activities include taster sessions in basketball, pickleball, badminton, table tennis, and tennis.
Swim school and water safety sessions will be available for children aged five to 11, focusing on both swimming skills and the water safety code.
There will also be a roller-skating experience suitable for all ages and abilities.
Due to limited spaces, booking in advance is recommended.
Members can reserve sessions through the Better UK app or by speaking to staff at their chosen centre.
Non-members can find details and booking instructions online at Get Ready For The Team England National Sports Weekend in York.
