Football fans are being reminded to put their health first during the excitement of the World Cup.

York Health Trainers are encouraging residents to maintain healthy routines as the expanded 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup kicks off, with matches taking place across Canada, the USA and Mexico.

Late-night games and matchday tension can disrupt sleep and increase the temptation to snack, drink more, or skip healthy habits.

To help, the York Health Trainers team has created short video tips for fans, offering reminders on staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and making mindful choices about food and drink.

Scott Kay, one of the York Health Trainers, said: "Look at the tournament fixture schedule in advance and decide beforehand which matches you’d like to have a drink during and which you’ll skip.

“Remember hydration is important, especially later at night, so incorporate water and/or soft drinks in between any alcoholic drinks.

"Because a lot of games are kicking off later than usual and during the working week, see if you can switch to low or non-alcoholic versions of your favourite drinks so you can enjoy the taste and wake up fresh and winning – hopefully like the England and Scotland teams will."
