On this day in 2016, the Archbishop of York was happy to be in chains during his visit to Strensall, part of his six-month pilgrimage across North and East Yorkshire.

Dr John Sentamu joined parishioners from St Mary's and Strensall Methodists, uniting their churches through a fund-raising paper chain.

During his visit, he met with soldiers and their families at Hurst Hall in Strensall Barracks and participated in the preliminary construction work for a new Church Hall at St Mary's.

Dr Sentamu also held a question and answer session at The Ship Inn before proceeding to Sheriff Hutton for Sunday Eucharist.

Leading up to his visit to Strensall, he had visited eight schools in the area, including Husthwaite, Crayke, Shipton, Brafferton, Alne, Easingwold, Sutton on the Forest, and Huby. He made prayers at 11 churches in the region and baptised five children in Brafferton.

His pilgrimage, focused on prayer, witness, and blessing, began on December 1, the year before, and concluded at York Minster on May 22, 2016.
