Mr Charters visited Lord Deramore’s School to meet Alfred, the winner of his Christmas card competition, and to congratulate him in person on his outstanding design.

“We are incredibly proud of Alfred and all our pupils who took part in the competition," said Mr Rouke.

"Alfred’s achievement reflects not only his creativity, but also the values we encourage at Lord Deramore’s School - curiosity about the world, respect for different cultures, and pride in our local heritage.

"At Lord Deramore’s, we’re incredibly proud to have over 50 nationalities and so it has been a fantastic opportunity for our school to highlight this.”

Mr Charters said: “In a year where some have tried to use flags to divide us, I thought such a hopeful card and message was a real reminder of the fantastic community spirit we have here in York.

"Alfred’s design perfectly captured the spirit of this year’s theme. It was wonderful to see how he brought together different cultural traditions of Christmas and weaved in different languages and flags too.

"Visiting Lord Deramore’s School to meet Alfred and his classmates was a real highlight and it was fantastic to join the Christmas carols too.”

This year’s competition invited young people to respond to the theme 'An International Christmas in York - celebrating how different cultures mark the festive season and reflecting the rich history of our city'.

During the visit, Mr Charters met with Alfred, his classmates and staff at Lord Deramore’s School, and spoke about the importance of celebrating diversity, creativity and community during the festive season.

He praised all those who took part in the competition, highlighting the high standard of entries received from schools across the area.

The winning design was used as the MP’s official Christmas card this year, and has been sent to schools, businesses, and charities in York, as well as the Speaker of the House of Commons, Prime Minister, and MPs from across Parliament.
