A YOUTH charity has teamed up with a York property and development business to help young people facing homelessness.

S Harrison has donated to local charity Safe and Sound Homes (SASH), a charity which does not have hostels or buildings of its own but relies on hosts to offer spare rooms in their own homes.

SASH works across North Yorkshire to help prevent homelessness amongst people aged 16 to 25 and relies on donations to support its work.

Explaining the way it works SASH’s Linsey Trower said: “We are about more than just providing a temporary or mid-term roof for young people. We strive to provide holistic support.  Many who come to us are facing emotional trauma or bereavement, family breakdown or they are escaping abusive situations.  In a safe and supportive environment we help them build confidence and self-esteem and help them to develop the life skills they need to thrive.

“At the core of what we do is building a network of hosts to provide the place of safety and security young people at risk need. We have a fantastic network of hosts, with open hearts and minds that provide a room to a young person in need within their home, but we need more hosts, especially in York, so we can help more young people.

“It is through donations from organisations like S Harrison that we are able to run an advertising campaign to support the host recruitment programme.  We launched earlier this month and already it is delivering results.”

Harrison – the development company behind a number of major projects in the city, including hotels, social housing and student accommodation, and the council’s West Offices complex – is committed to supporting charities in all the cities in which it works.

S Harrison’s MD, Ann Scott said: “For several years now we have been aware of the brilliant work that SASH does across North Yorkshire and been delighted to link with them.  We specifically gave our support to them while we have been working on the delivery of the award-winning Raffles Hall student scheme which we completed earlier this year.  It is great to see the funding we provide being put to such good use.”
