A GOOD Samaritan who helped rescue someone from a York river has been called 'an absolute hero'.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service say they were called at 1.09am on Thursday (November 6) to the river Ouse after reports of some in the water in York city centre close to the City Mills apartments.

A service spokesman said: “Crews from York and Acomb attended an incident involving a person in water clinging to a boat.

“A passerby assisted by holding onto the person in the water until crews arrived.

“Crews set up down stream safety and used a throw line for the people to hold onto until York Rescue Boat arrived. The people were then transported by boat to ambulance crews who were waiting on a bank side.”

A woman who lives in City Mills, but didn't want to be named, said: "The guy who held on to the man who was in the water helping him stay afloat deserves a medal.

"I don't know the rescuer's name but he shouted to the River Rescue Boat crew that he was called Will.

"He was there for about half an hour and it was cold and wet, he was talking to the man in the water and singing with him - he's an absolute hero."
