The recently reformed Thornton Players are in rehearsals for their first production inspired by the Raising the Roof Appeal for the Lady Lumley's Alms Houses.
“’Ow Much fer a Roof?” is a specially devised piece that celebrates what the players love about life in the village whilst exploring Lady Lumley’s extraordinary legacy.
The appeal has been launched to raise £100,000 to help preserved the village's landmarks.
Lady Lumley’s Almshouses were built in Thornton-le-Dale in 1656 by Elizabeth Lumley to provide shelter for the poor and elderly. These historic buildings have stood for over 350 years as a testament to community care and heritage and remain a vital part of the village, offering affordable housing to local residents.
The Grade II-listed Almshouses are a registered charity and a member of the Almshouses Association.
All proceeds from the performances will to the Raise the Roof appeal, which supports vital repairs to the roof extensions. The fundraising also helps cover associated costs, including temporary accommodation during the building work.
This piece was specially created by the players. It explores the legacy of Lady Lumley's bequests through history as her ghost explores our village – from day trippers and ice cream to famous landmarks and local characters.
A spokesperson for the players said: "For more than 80 years, the Thornton Players had entertained the village, but just over a year ago, the society was on the verge of folding. Instead, we embarked on a series of acting workshops to explore plays, ideas and storytelling just for the fun of it. Over the past year a committed group of Players met regularly at our Sunday workshops. The Raising the Roof appeal proved just the excuse we needed to put on a show.
"We recommend you book early as seating is limited and tickets are selling fast.
