URGENT repairs are set to begin on a well-used community football pitch.

North Yorkshire Council have said that groundwork will start on-site in January on the 3G pitch at Scarborough Sports Village, with the goal of reopening for the 2026/27 season.

The pitch, used by both Scarborough Athletic and Scarborough Ladies, was originally due to be resurfaced earlier this year.

However, a site survey revealed serious structural issues that made the pitch unavailable for competitive fixtures for the 2025/26 season and delayed work.

Jo Ireland, assistant director of culture and leisure at North Yorkshire Council, said: "The structural repairs required to stabilise the pitch are technically complex.

"Significant positive work has already been carried out alongside Willmott Dixon on how best to tackle the problem and ensure the pitch has a sustainable future that benefits the whole community in Scarborough and beyond."

The repairs will include drainage and masonry work, grouting, and the installation of a structural mattress and tarmac sub-base, with work expected to begin in the new year.

Cllr Simon Myers, executive member for leisure at North Yorkshire Council, said: "I hope this development comes as welcome news for all users of the pitch, including Scarborough Athletic and Scarborough Ladies, their members, supporters, and the wider football community."
