AN army of volunteers are busy preparing help to those in need in York this Christmas.

The Salvation Army is getting ready for its Christmas season after the year has seen a number of changes with the new leaders Majors Andrea and Andrew Vertigan appointed with a remit to create a city wide strategy.

Major Andrew said this means that this year the Salvation Army Toy Appeal and homelessness work - Christmas hampers of goodies donated by the people of York – and accompanying Christmas cards, written by York people for rough sleepers as part of a campaign by Radio York – has been joined up.

He said:  "Early Intervention lead, and local well-known figure Charlie Malarkey will be distributing gifts on an early morning Christmas walk with other members of the Salvation Army and its supporters and will again be running the Christmas card appeal.

"The Salvation Army York last year supported more than 650 families across the whole city and gave out some 3,500 presents.

"Such was last years demand that they have had to find a bigger venue to prepare the parcels and gifts.

"As part of the desire to partner and work together we are thrilled that Lidgett Grove Methodist Church have kindly given us space in their building free of charge. A truly generous gift."

Major Andrew says they have already received requests from various agencies this year.

"It looks like we may well be inundated with more requests than ever, as people grapple with the challenges that they are facing in these challenging times," he said.

"This is a beautiful time of the year but for many it places extra stress and pressure upon families.  If a small gift from ourselves can help bring a Christmas smile and some cheer then we are more than willing to go the extra mile.

"Last year I was moved on many occasions by the way people embraced him and his team as they knocked on the door.  One person literally saying it's life-saver."

Major Andrew has asked if anyone would like to give to support the work and or donate any toys or funds then please drop him a line on york.corps@salvationarmy.org.uk

If you would like to volunteer and or get involved in the appeal then the team will be working much of December.
