A new contemporary art gallery could be coming to York, with a study backed by £30,000 in funding set to look at whether it is viable.
The study, backed by a York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority grant, will look at potential demand for the project, its economic impact and how it could be delivered.
Make It York, which has received the funding, stated a new gallery would showcase national and international work, nurture local talent and strengthen the region’s cultural infrastructure.
The tourism and events body added in a report that the study would assess if the scheme is a sustainable and viable investment for the region.
Cash for the study has come from the combined authority’s £600,000 Mayoral Business Innovation Fund, with grants approved in September.
News of the study comes as part of Make It York’s most recent update to York Council which is set to be discussed by councillors on Monday, October 13.

The organisation stated it was continuing to build on the success of previous years after making record profits in 2024/5.
It added York’s reputation as a destination of choice to live, work, study and visit had been strengthened in part through its marketing which includes an expanding online presence.
But it added the current financial year was presenting difficulties including due to increased staff costs which were having an effect across the tourism and events sector.
Upcoming events for Make It York include the UNESCO Media Arts Expo which is returning for its second year in November.

The event, organised in partnership with the arts magazine Aesthetica and backed by £60,000 in combined authority funding, is set to run from Thursday, November 6 to Saturday, November 8.
Make It York has also secured £100,000 in funding in collaboration with North Yorkshire Council for work through the Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP).
The cash is set to be used to improve data and intelligence gathering and to develop an international marketing and travel trade strategy to attract more visitors from overseas.
Make It York is set to attend both the Destination Britain North East Asia event and London’s World Travel Market in November as part of efforts to boost international visitors.
LVEP funding is also set to be used to work on addressing skills and recruitment challenges facing the visitor sector and to help Visit England encourage sustainability and accessibility locally.
Make It York’s report stated the organisation was in a robust position which would allow it to deliver on all its objectives for the years ahead.
