A school has become the first state school in the city of York to receive recognition from a scheme for its support of pupils with asthma.
Danesgate Community School in Fulford was awarded Asthma Friendly School status as part of a citywide programme launched earlier this year by York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The initiative, developed with Humber and North Yorkshire ICB, aims to improve asthma care for school-age children and reduce the incidence of asthma attacks.
Danesgate, a specialist setting for pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs, arranged for asthma training for more than 100 staff as part of the scheme.
Alex Oliver, asthma friendly school nurse for York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "I was very impressed with how passionate they are.
"I hope more schools will follow Danesgate’s lead and join the movement to make York’s classrooms safer for every child with asthma."
The set of asthma-friendly standards which schools participating in the programme must work towards include: a written asthma policy and register; the keeping of emergency inhalers on site; and a system to track medication expiry dates.
