Campaigners opposed to the roll out of massive solar farms across East Yorkshire are planning a march close to an approved site ‘as big as Durham’ this weekend as part of a ‘National Day of Action.’

ERASE -East Riding Against Solar Expansion, says the government, which recently gave the go ahead for the 1277ha Boom Power East Yorkshire Solar Farm north of Howden, should rethink its energy strategy.

ERASE spokesman George McManus said: “For the government to secure it's net zero objectives it needs to get the public on board. This requires goodwill. There's a lot of sympathy with the government's desire to decarbonise. But they're in danger of losing public support if they don't change direction.

“We're detecting growing opposition, deep resentment and even anger from local people opposed to the industrialisation of the East Riding and the loss of valuable agricultural land. People are wakening up to the damage that will be done by enormous solar factories.”

He added: “The government needs to realise that public support will be lost if they don't have a fundamental rethink on strategy.  A paradigm shift is needed to deliver their objectives.  We're expecting a great turnout both at our community walk in Spaldington and at 25 simultaneous events across the country.”

The Spaldington Stroll will start at 10am Sunday June 8 from Ings Lane and will be a three mile circular walk around fields due to be blanketed with imported solar panels.
