A much-loved and award-winning bakery in York has closed its city centre shop after less than a year.

Sweet Dreams Bakery opened its store in George Hudson Street last June.

This followed Mara Cioineag, 27, and husband, 25-year-old Dainius Laurusevicius, starting their business in their home kitchen during the lockdown of 2020, with deliveries being made via Just Eat.

The bakery, whose main products were cupcakes, brownies and cookies, gained many admirers.

Last September, the couple also won the York Press best bakery competition, which has been chosen by our readers.

It had a large following on social media, including 1,000 likes and 1,200 followers on Facebook.

Google rated the bakery 4.8 stars out of five, based on 33 reviews.

However, Google now says the venture is “temporarily closed.”

Sweet Dreams Bakery also hasn’t posted on Facebook since Christmas.

In recent weeks, the Grade II-listed property has been empty, with a ‘To Let’ sign in the windows and signage removed. But the premises remain in their distinctive pink colouring.

Garness Jones Commercial is leasing the 818 sq ft property for £1,250 a month.

Neither Mara or Dainius responded to our requests for comment.
