Styled by Olivia May is York Press Best Hairdresser finalist

Styled by Olivia May is the eighth of ten finalists in the York Press Best Hairdresser contest.

After readers have nominated hundreds of favourites using an online voting platform, they will now be able to vote for their Best Barber or Hairdresser 2024 by picking up copies of The Press newspaper until March 1.

The winner is set to be announced during the week of March 10 and each copy of The Press in the coming days will feature a short profile on each business and why it thinks it deserves to be voted number one in York.

Styled by Olivia May is a business run by Olivia Wileman from her base at Mermaid Hair and Beauty. She operates her own business with a focus on colour.

She said: “I started as a Saturday girl aged 14 in a local salon. After leaving school I started my apprenticeship in the same salon alongside attending York College.

“I qualified with my level two diploma in 2020 and then went on to complete my level three diploma in 2021. In June 2022, I took the plunge in going self-employed and that’s when styledbyoliviamay was created.

“I pride myself in creating a relaxed and comfortable experience for clients. It is important to me that clients have an enjoyable experience and truly be themselves!”

As a colour specialist, Olivia has chosen to focus in blondes, lived in colour, and balayage with lash extensions and lifts available for those who want to feel truly pampered.

“To be on the top ten list amongst some of the hairdressers I have looked up to since I started in the industry feels surreal enough!

“I had my baby girl Florence in March 2024 and was back to work a short eight weeks later. My business has grown very quickly, and I can not thank my loyal clientele enough for how amazing you all are!

“I owe my success to my family, partner and team at Mermaid Hair and Beauty for always supporting me through the bad and the good! Thank you for this amazing opportunity, I am truly honoured.”
