A COUPLE from York are off to Iceland on the trek of a lifetime.

Kate Burton, 43, and her husband 40-year-old Dale have signed up for the St Leonard’s Hospice Iceland Trek.

The intrepid pair plan to discover active volcanoes and walk alongside hot springs as the pair trek to Iceland’s youngest volcanos, before scaling the impressive Vörðuskeggi Peak with spectacular views over Lake Þingvellir, Eyjafjallajökull and the distant Westman Islands.

They are also looking forward to seeing the spectacular Northern Lights.

Kate, a head teacher in Leeds, is doing the trek in memory of her grandad John who spent the last two weeks of his life being cared for in St Leonard’s Hospice in 2007.

She said: “I wanted to do a challenge that was a little bit different, so when I read about the St Leonard’s Iceland Trek event and saw it was a guided trek, I really wanted to do it.

"Iceland is a place I’ve always wanted to go and is on my bucket list, so I immediately signed up with my husband and we can’t wait to go.”

As a head, Kate said she was very grateful to have the opportunity to do this for the charity  and hopes to raise at least two thousand pounds.

"I'm now urging others to sign up for this exciting fundraising challenge," she said.

“We’re going for five days next November, which includes the three-day trek. I’ve had an amazing mixture of reactions from family and friends – some people have said ‘wow that’s a big challenge’ and others have said ‘that’s really great – you will ace it!’.

"The fact that it’s a guided trek takes all the worry away from doing it I think. Currently I’m thinking about what I can do to fundraise, maybe a cake-bake at school, some events at home - I’ve got ten months now to think about how to raise the money.”

It involves raising at least £1,500 for St Leonard’s Hospice. There is an additional cost to cover the trip costs.

Sarah Atkinson, Community and Events Manager at St Leonard’s Hospice, said: “This well-organised, guided trek is an opportunity to raise much-needed funds for the hospice while visiting a beautiful country.

“Next year we are also marking the 40th anniversary of the hospice, so it’s a great time to be taking on a challenge such as this. The hospice relies upon the incredible generosity of our community to raise the funds needed to provide vital care, so by taking part, you’ll be making a meaningful difference. Anyone interested should sign up now as places are limited.”
