In their first column for The Press, Jake Furby, director of York-based Inclusive Equal Rights UK (IERUK) and York LGBT Forum member, talks about the importance of unity and resilience.
In a world where the fight for LGBTQ+ rights continues amidst rising homophobia, the Family Shambles events in York stand as a radiant beacon of love, resilience, and self-expression. In our city, as in many parts of the UK, LGBTQ+ hate crimes have seen a concerning rise of 73 per cent. These incidents range from verbal harassment to physical violence, often fuelled by deep-seated prejudice and transphobia. With the rise in hate crime many LGBTQ+ people are looking for places to feel safe and express themselves.
On Friday, August 16, at 8pm, Yates York was transformed into a haven of queer celebration, where everyone was encouraged to unapologetically be themselves.
This event, entitled Pink Pony Club, is not just another night out; it is a defiant act of joy and togetherness, a celebration of our community's strength in the face of adversity. We know that the fight for acceptance is far from over, but at Family Shambles event we respond to hate with love, to exclusion with inclusion, and to fear with an unyielding expression of who we are.
The evening promises an eclectic lineup of performances, with some of the most dynamic and talented local queer artists around, including:
- Crow Rudd
- Mango Gwynne
- Cuppa T
- Tommy Boi
- Donna Carer
- Lily Monarchh
- Ferneado
- Eris Envy
- Lois Common Denominator
These performers their unique flair to the stage, showcasing a range of talents that span the spectrum of queer artistry. From drag to music to performance art, the Family Shambles is a space where every form of queer expression is celebrated.
Members of the audience said: "These nights mean I can have a social night, bring people together, and able to connect without having to fear violence."
"Safe space supportive, so inclusive and connection. In a way it is a form of rebellion and resistance to spaces which divide."
"Without this space I would find it difficult to actively have a social life on a night time."
"I first performed at the shambles events, it was my big break, now I am having success abroad in particular Finland."
The Family Shambles is more than just a party; it’s a statement. It’s about coming together as a community to celebrate our identities, uplift each other, and show that love and resilience will always prevail over hate.
This gathering transcends mere entertainment; it is a powerful declaration of our shared strength and solidarity. In a time when voices of division seek to diminish our sense of belonging, Family Shambles serves as a vibrant reminder of our collective power. It is a celebration where every individual’s presence is a testament to the richness and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community.
Each performance, each interaction, each moment of joy is a defiant act of unity, pushing back against the shadows of discrimination with the light of our creativity and spirit. The event fosters an environment where everyone feels empowered to express themselves freely, breaking down barriers and building bridges of understanding and acceptance.
In this safe and inclusive space, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting one another and advocating for a world where everyone can thrive without fear. Family Shambles is not just an event; it is a movement—a celebration of our collective resilience and a beacon of hope for a future where love and acceptance reign supreme.
