A NEW seven storey block of student flats is planned for Foss Islands Road.

The 112-bedroom building would be built on the corner of Mansfield Street - next to Andrew Jackson Solicitors and opposite the former Carpetright store.

The former Carpetright store is also earmarked for redevelopment into a Premier Inn hotel.

Developer Urbanite has applied for planning permission for the block of student flats to be built on the site of Aubrey House, which would be demolished as part of the scheme.

Urbanite also runs the 100-bedroom Coal Yard student block on Mansfield Street, where the price of a room is from £159 per week.

The planning application says the new block would "form the second phase" of the Coal Yard development. It would also feature a cinema room, shared lounge and laundry room.

A statement says: "The scheme will be carefully crafted to create a high quality contemporary building which harmonises with the surrounding developments, drawing on materials from the surrounding area whilst providing a modern, well thought out development.

"The building is designed to be a continuation of the Coal Yard development and this is achieved through the use of a similar palate of materials and architectural features which will include the same buff brick with recessed brick panels and dark grey windows."

It adds that a green roof will be created and a stepped floor plan means accommodation will be set above the flood level.

The plans include 108 bicycle spaces and four car parking bays.

A separate planning application submitted for the former Carpetright store would see the building demolished and a 188 bedroom hotel built in its place. The application has not yet been decided.
