COLOURFUL knitted birds which were on display in a York park flocked to a city charity shop at the weekend.

Hundreds of the woollen creatures were used in a "yarnstorm" in Rowntree Park last month, and the crafty creations have now gone on sale to raise money for St Leonard's Hospice.

The yarn-storming project was initiated by York residents and craft enthusiasts Deborah New and Sally Stone, and more than 80 people helped to create the 500 knitted, stitched and crocheted wildlife.

Now the birds have had their very own bird bath to be cleaned up ready for sale in the St Leonard’s Hospice charity shop on Scarcroft Road.

Sally said: "Please go along and buy a bird to support the Hospice. You could stock up on robins for Christmas, make a brilliant bird mobile or bunting, have one perch on a shelf or let one roost on the sofa!

"You could even post a picture on social media of your brilliant bird in its new habitat using the hashtags #buyabird and #brilliantbirds."

The birds will be on sale from 9am on Saturday, and prices start from just £1. The shop opening hours are 9am – 4pm Monday to Saturday.
