The Archbishop of York was happy to be in chains when he visited Strensall as part of his six-month pilgrimage around North and East Yorkshire.

Dr John Sentamu joined parishioners from St Mary's and Strensall Methodists linking their two churches with a fund-raising paper chain on Saturday.

He also met with soldiers and their families at Hurst Hall in Strensall Barracks, joined in the preliminary construction work for a new Church Hall at St Mary's and held a question and answer session at The Ship Inn before heading off to Sheriff Hutton for Sunday Eucharist.

He had also called in on eight schools at Husthwaite, Crayke, Shipton, Brafferton, Alne, Easingwold, Sutton on the Forest and Huby and said prayers at 11 churches in the area in the days leading up to his Strensall visit as well as baptising five children in Brafferton.

His pilgrimage of prayer, witness and blessing began on December 1 and will finish at York Minster on May 22.
