YORK City Knights have endured another blow after it was confirmed Jack Briscoe’s season has been ended by injury – but the club are hopeful his time at Huntington Stadium is not over.

Briscoe, a regular performer for York on dual-registration from Super League side Hull, has received a double whammy, having been released by his parent club Hull after being told by medics he would not play again this term.

He was helped off the field after landing awkwardly in the Knights’ agonising Kingstone Press Championship defeat to Barrow three weeks ago and, while initial X-rays suggested he had not broken a leg as feared and could return after a month, more recent scans have since shown he broke a heel bone and badly damaged ankle ligaments.

Knights head coach Gary Thornton says the 21-year-old threequarter was one of the successes of the controversial dual-reg system and is surprised the Airlie Birds have not offered him a new deal. York are now speaking to him about staying permanently at Huntington Stadium but Thornton expects plenty of other clubs to make offers too.

“I would love to see him back in a York shirt,” said Thornton. “He’s been really good for us and I think he’s enjoyed it here. He’s a free agent now but whether we can persuade him to stay is a different matter.

“He will have generated some interest because of his form and whether we can afford him remains to be seen but we just have to throw our hat in the ring.”

Dual-reg has proved hit and miss for the Knights but Thornton said of Biscoe: “He’s had a fantastic attitude here and he’s played as if he was a full York City Knights player. He’s one of the (dual-reg) players from Hull who has come with the right spirit.

“He epitomises what dual-reg was supposed to be about – a young player continuing his progress in the Championship as he looks to make it with his Super League club. I’m surprised Hull aren’t keeping him.”
