York City manager Gary Mills is in no mood to make panic signings with the transfer window now reopened for business.

Yesterday’s 2-2 home draw with Mansfield Town meant the fifth-placed Minstermen have won only two of their last nine matches in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

But Mills has insisted that any new arrivals will need to be better than those already at Bootham Crescent.

The City boss said: “The window is open now but, if we do sign anybody, it won’t be a case of bringing in like for like. You have to improve your squad not just bolster it. I won’t get anybody in that isn’t better than what I’ve got and I’ve got some good players and good lads.”

Top scorer Jason Walker is expected to remain sidelined for the duration of the transfer window with a groin tear, but Mills also insisted that he would not be making any rash decisions to strengthen his attacking options.

He added: “We’ve got good strikers at the club and nobody tends to let good ones go either but, if I can find anybody better than what we have, then I will do.”

Mills confirmed, meanwhile, that Kettering frontman Moses Ashikodi has made his loan move from the Poppies permanent until the end of the season.

The former England under-19 international has failed to make the bench in City’s last two matches, but Mills added: “He’s working hard day in, day out to get that sharpness he needs and, when he does, he will be another candidate to play down the middle.”

City trailed to visiting goals from Matt Green and Aman Verma yesterday before Matty Blair pulled a goal back on 77 minutes and Jamal Fyfield grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser.

Mills was pleased with his players’ character but added: “Going behind seems to be our thing at the moment.

“We had to work hard to come back from 2-0 and, while the players deserve great credit for digging in to get a point thanks to a great finish by Jamal, you can’t keep doing that. We know we’ve got to win games but, during this difficult period we are going through at the moment, we are having to settle for points.

“We’re not losing but, if we are going to succeed, we have to turn draws into wins.”

Mills also called for greater consistency levels from his team, saying: “Mansfield are a strong, direct team but we’ve got to do better at times and we know that.

“It’s frustrating because we have set standards at this football club that we don’t want to drop below. There’s no doubt that we have done but we’ve just got to keep working hard and hope things turn in the next game.

“I want my players’ performances to go from good to excellent to out of this world because you can’t be successful with players who have one good game, then a couple not so good. Once you’ve set standards, you have to stick to them.

“I am here to get York City out of this league and everybody’s seen what we can do. It’s just frustrating at the moment because we are falling short of what we are capable of.”

Mills went on to reserve his highest praise yesterday for an attendance of 4,284, describing the biggest crowd of the season as “fantastic”.

I don't know why we are permanently signing a striker who" is working hard to get the sharpness he needs" and can't even get on the bench at the moment. I'd like to have seen Moke get a run at the Mansfield defence yesterday-he may have made the difference with his speed and trickery.
Chambers and Banjo are currently out of touch as is Reedy. We have to trust GM to improve the situation to consolidate a play off place because winning the title is now impossible.

I think GM needs to give the players there particular jobs on match days, and stick to it, the players seem confused to me, look at the their first goal yesterday, GM had just swiched the forward line giving hendo the job of tracking the runner, he did"nt have clue what he was supposed to be doing, and we conceeded, let the players play in their strongest positions and do what there good at, also tell the defenders to defend first before considering bombing forward leaving big holes at the back, need to start learning lessons and quickly.

Think Mills has lost the plot myself. He hasnt a clue what the best 11 is and we have two forwards in Reed and Ashikodi who Mills says are not match fit!!!!!.With Henderson not up to this standard we are plenty short of forward options with Walker out.
Come on Mills get the forward line sorted and bring some quality in now.

GM says he will only bring in players better than we already have then gives Ashikodi a permanent deal.If he's short of match fitness would have liked to have seen more effort when he's been on the pitch instead of strolling around for most of the time.Think we need to go 4-4-2 as no one else at club can play lone striker role apart from JW.

I'd be worried if mills skills in the transfer market are as bad as his mathematics! To me, the 4295 against Wrexham is more than the 4284 against Mansfield, meaning he is praising the second highest attendance of the season! I hope his first class targets aren't second without him realising aha!

Danny Wright would not be too bad but will Wrexham let him go to promotion rivals (Sorry ex promotion rivals), Ashikodi signed permanently and Mills will not panick buy, well sorry that tells me straight away Walker will be gone very imminently. As for Ashikodi, I will reserve judgement until he is at full fitness and getting regular games. It is difficult for any strikers not getting regular 90 minutes under their belts without a reserve team system.
Reed is also a sufferer of this scenario and he needs to start more games rather than being utilised as a possible super sub.

But alike a couple of the posts above, yes get in Barnes Homer and quickly before league clubs get in there! Proven at conference level and we all know the talent that Luton give away!!!

Then please get us a big commanding centre back and another tough battling box to box midfielder!

"Sorry ex promotion rivals" - they are still promotion rivals if Fleetwood win the league and Wrexham join us in the play-offs. I don't think Wrexham will loan him to us but I agree Barnes-Homer, if we can get him, would add a lot to the side. We can release/loan out Henderson and/or Ashikodi to make room for him. A fit Walker/Reed/Barnes-H
omer strike force with Chambers in reserve would be pretty strong but I can't see Mills keeping Reed, or it seems letting Ashikodi go anytime soon.

Barnes-Homer would be a perfect partner for Reedy in a 4-4-2. but then I think Hendo would be as well as the big-man. Reedy looked at his best alongside Ranks last year....I don't understand why we don't play to the strengths of the players we've got.
Ingham, Banjo, McGurk, Fyfield, Mez, Moke, Kerr, McLaughlin, Blair, Hendo & Reed would be my starting team for Saturday.
Mills has still done a great job in his time at the club, remember that! keep the faith!

I agree rogue, Mills' only downfall is trying to play players out of place to adopt his favourite formations. He should pick the best formation to suit the players he has got. Reed with a big man would emulate the successful Sunderland Quinn and Philipps partnership with blair and chambers / moke on the wings feeding them from wide and paddy and boucs feeding up the middle.
I think looking at it that way that Mills may feel he has to play all three best midfielders in the division in paddy, boucs and kerr but sometimes you have to give something away!

It would be a major suprise if Barnes-Home went back to Rochdale. He was recalled from loan at 'dale to be released by Luton. The Rochdale website said goodbye and thanks etc. All of which suggests he's going somewhere else.

Absolutely ridiculous to sign Ashikodi. IMO he's crap, just not good enough. how can Mills claim the title is still the target then sign up Ashikodi? And to all you lot speculating about a striker, there's no chance he'll get anyone else in so please shut up with all the Barnes-Homer rubbish. We have Reed and Henderson and Ashikodi now, and Walker when he gets back. Obviously no other strikers are coming in, try looking at the main problem which is our goal-leaking defence.
