City chiefs hope to top 7,000 for play-off clash

IT is the hottest ticket in town – and today is your last chance to be a part of the biggest York City crowd for seven years.

Not since the Minstermen entertained Hull in 2003 will Bootham Crescent have played host to a bigger attendance than that expected for tomorrow night’s Blue Square Premier play-off semi-final first leg against Luton Town.

With more than 6,000 already signed up to attend, club chiefs are confident of surpassing the 6,660 crowd which turned out for York’s last home play-off tie against Morecambe in 2007.

And, with the club ticket office closing at 5pm this afternoon, fans have one remaining opportunity to get in on the action and push the crowd past the 7,000 barrier.

The last time that happened was when 7,856 watched Hull win 2-0 on Boxing Day in 2003.

Jason McGill, York City chairman, said: “Ticket sales have been tremendous and it fantastic to receive such great support and to know people are getting behind the club.

“We are confident that we will surpass the play-off attendance at the Morecambe game three years ago and hope to get a crowd of over 7,000 tomorrow night.

“On this basis, the atmosphere will be electric and with more than 5,000 home fans, it will really help to raise the spirits of the team.”

Luton have been given an allocation of 1,700 and are expected to sell all of their tickets, while the home capacity is around 6,300. An attendance of 7,872 would represent a sell out.

McGill reminded supporters the game is all-ticket and, under police instructions, the club is not able to sell tickets past 5pm today. He said: “So please come down to the club as soon as possible to ensure you will be there tomorrow.”

The City chief praised the squad and the management team of Martin Foyle and Andy Porter in reaching the play-offs, but said there was still “a serious job to be done.”

“The board of directors are delighted with the team’s achievements this season having reached the play-offs,” McGill added.

“Our manager Martin Foyle and his assistant Andy Porter have worked very hard to turn around our fortunes and assemble a team that has a real chance of gaining promotion to the Football League.

“The players are all committed and want to succeed and we need our fans to really show them the support they deserve over the next two games against Luton.

“We want the people of York to get behind the team and show there is real interest in the football club in the local community. Off the field the ongoing pursuit of a new community stadium for York is our primary focus and success on the field and support from the people of York will certainly assist our efforts to achieve this.”

He continued: “There is great excitement around the club, but it is very different from the FA Trophy last year. There is a serious job to be done and we remain focused on our aim for promotion.

“We have displayed good performances against all the top teams this season and we have quality players that have the ability to take us all the way.

“We are very proud of our on-pitch achievements and the great strides forward we have made since last season under Martin Foyle’s management.”

Come on people of York, this is where you show your pride in the city. It's going to be an amazing atmosphere and if you're "thinking" about coming, get down to BC, or phone them up, and get your ticket. It is not to be missed!!

Everyone, and I mean everyone, needs to do something, be it clap, cheer or join in the songs. We need to make BC the fortress it has to be with 6,000 home fans verus 1,700 away fans. This is going to be a very tough game, so the players need any ounce of our support, for the entire game, regardless of if we're playing well or not.

Let's give these players of ours the 12th man they deserve. If a player makes an error, encourage him, let him know we've got his back.

We can seriously do this, and we all need to be up for the battle to come. Biggest sporting game in York for years and years.

Hope the password doesn't apply tomorrow night, Yorkfan 71 - the Luton fans are no angels (although they are nowhere near as arrogant as Stevenage fans). Will we go 4-4-2? Can't wait, have ticket and am sleeping at mum's in central York, as well as having booked Friday off on leave, to maximise post match consumption. In Edinburgh Monday and Tuesday, so I can only watch half of the job in hand but, "c/mon you mighty, mighty Minstermen!"

Luton are the best team by far which I'm sure no-one disputes but I'm confident that unlike the last few weeks, Foyle can really rally the lads to put every ounce of effort into this game. We need a lead after this 1st leg - that is paramount otheriwse I fear it is game over. AND if the fat stinking slob that sat in front of me for the Morecambe play-off sits in front of me again - be warned I'll not stand for that kind of behaviour again.
