York City boss warns Minstermen players on pitfalls of social media

First published in News

YORK City boss Nigel Worthington has told his players to be “very careful” what they post on social media websites.

Worthington’s comments came following the consternation caused among online City supporters when goalkeeper Michael Ingham changed his Twitter profile to read “ex York City GK” after on-loan Charlton shot-stopper Nick Pope was preferred between the sticks for last weekend’s 0-0 home draw with Bristol Rovers.

Former Northern Ireland international Ingham has since deleted those words from his profile but Worthington has warned his team of the potential pitfalls presented by social media usage.

He said: “I honestly think social media is a very dangerous thing because people are tempted to say things and probably don’t know the extent of how far and wide their words will travel. Thank God it’s not something I am into because I cannot get accused of this, that and the other.

“It’s out there, it’s up-to-date and it’s the fashion, but people and players have to be very careful what they say because, sometimes, it can do themselves more damage than anybody else, so let’s leave it at that.”

Ingham’s Twitter alteration provoked further website debate about the long-serving ’keeper’s dropping from the team, but Worthington was in no mood last night to make any more references to the battle for the gloves.

The City chief added: “I really don’t want to talk any more about the goalkeeping situation. That has been well ventured this week and I want to put a finish to it.”

Well said Nigel. Too many people can`t see a joke or tongue in cheek comment when they see it. Just for the record ...Michael Ingham is one of our most loyal players.Come on City!!
