York City manager Nigel Worthington announces retained list - updated

York Press: York City manager Nigel Worthington York City manager Nigel Worthington

YORK CITY manager Nigel Worthington envisages the club need to sign as many as a dozen players – and of Football League pedigree – after announcing his retained list.

The Minstermen boss, whose future at the club remains unclear heading into talks with chairman Jason McGill, largely dismantled former chief Gary Mills’ play-off winning squad of 12 months ago – with midfielders Scott Kerr and Paddy McLaughlin among those joining striker Jason Walker in heading for the Bootham Crescent exit.

Worthington offered deals to only five players – skipper Chris Smith, defenders Lanre Oyebanjo, David McGurk, utility player Dan Parslow and midfielder Tom Platt.

Smith and McGurk have been offered one-year deals, while Oyebanjo and Parslow are mulling over two-year contracts. Platt will sign a two-year deal on Friday.

Others released by Worthington are Lee Bullock, Jon Challinor, Chris Doig, Ben Everson, Michael Potts and Jamie Reed.

Ashley Chambers, Tom Allan, Michael Coulson, Jamal Fyfield, Michael Ingham, David McDaid and John McReady are all under contract.

Worthington said: “You have got to keep moving forward. One thing the club is looking to do is to sign more League players if it is going to move forward. It has to take that step – to get that quality into the football club.”

Asked whether the step up from the Conference into League Two had been too big for some of his released players, Worthington added: “Whether it is Conference to League Two, League Two into League One and so on, people don’t realise the size of the step there is. For some it can be a step too far.”

Worthington said his own future at the club had not yet come under discussion – with talks to begin in the next few days.

“We haven’t discussed anything,” he said.

“I will speak to the chairman over the next few days and next week but it is not about my situation.

“It is about how the club is moving forward, with the training ground and all that side of things. I want to see the club moving forward.

“Whether I am in situ, or someone else is, that individual will need as much time as possible to get players on board. We are looking to get other people signed up on contracts to the nine or ten already in house. We are looking for another ten, 11 or 12 players. There is a bit of work to come.”

Worthington continued: “These decisions are being done for the right reasons, to make things better and to begin to bring in the players you want within the framework of the budget you are going to work with.

“People have got to bear in mind that, although there is a reasonable budget there, York City isn’t the wealthiest club in the world.

“It’s a fine balance and you have got to get the maximum out of it.”

No real surprises then. Also reckon Worthington will try and shift Fyfield and McDaid as can't see them featuring again in City colours.

Hopefully all those who have been offered a new contract will accept.
As for Matty Blair, I like the fact he is keeping his options open. You never know, he might stay in the end which would be good for the club in my opinion.
As for those released, I think its understandable. I would have liked to see Paddy and Potts stay as they are young, could have sent them out on loan to gain some more match time.
All in all, I believe Nigel has made some good choices here.
All the best to those who have been released though.

So if Paddy goes there could be a truth in Adam Roach coming from Borough. He is a young winger estimated to be going to cost £50,000 to £100,000.

Now looking forward to seeing how the rebuilding starts to shape up.

Personally I agree with virtually all of NW's decisions here. The only one I would have been 50/50 on is Paddy as I think there is a decent League player in there but in fairness he has only shown brief glimpses this season.

I really hope Smith, Parslow and McGurk accept their offers because they all seem to have YCFC at heart and have been great servants to the club through the good and bad times and deserve further opportunities.

No great surprises in this retained list. I would also expect Fyfield and McDaid to be leaving soon. We have room to bring in stronger players now. I just feel a bit sorry for Scott Kerr, as injuries have ruined his York City career.

...and still no formal announcement about NW himself.

I assume the fact that he's been doing the necessary work on the retained list and contract offers mean that his own contract delay is just down to dotting i's, crossing t's, etc. ...or is he going to continue on a rolling contract, I wonder?

It's a bit of a night of the long knives, but I'm glad it's been done swiftly and professionally. Hopefully it's a sign of lessons learnt from previous seasons.

It won't have been easy for some of the players to hear this within 48 hours of Saturday's celebrations, but far better all round for them to hear it face to face now, than by phone or text in four or six weeks' time because the manager has found someone else to do their job.

It really puts the pressure on the management to get replacements in pdq, but I'm certain he won't be worried by that in the slightest.

Thanks are due to the released players for their efforts, and let's hope the retained players are happy with their new offers.

Let's push on together and aim for a top-half finish next season.

McReady's a difficult one as we've just not seen enough of him to make a call on whether he's good enough or not.

I assume NW has his doubts as he never seems to even make the bench but to be fair to the lad he's had a lot of injury problems so maybe with a full pre-season under his belt he may come good.

McDaid was one of GM,s poor signings and from the brief bits we,ve seen of him it,s sure he,s not good enough for us. No surprises on released players and I think McReady will come good given chance. Tom Allan should get his chance at left back next season and expect him to do well. Hope all those offered deals accept them including Matty Blair. This will be a different York City team next year who will show skill, determination and aggression which should ensure no end of season fears of going down.two good strikers, keeper and central defender now required plus 2midfielders. Adam Reed one of them I hope. If NW stays there surely will be no more Henderson, Ashikodis,Dobies etc.

If we can get hold of Reed,O`Connell and Carson then we will have a strong defence assumming the "old hands" sign again.

YORK CITY director Sophie Hicks admits relegation to the Conference could have forced the club to go part-time, writes Richard Sutcliffe.

An unbeaten six-game run to end the season helped the Minstermen to a 17th-place finish after having gone into Easter Saturday propping up the Football League.

Victory at Dagenham & Redbridge on the final day ultimately banished any fears of the drop as Aldershot Town and Barnet instead slid into the Conference, much to the relief of Hicks and her fellow directors at Bootham Crescent.

She last night told the Yorkshire Post: “We desperately needed to stay in the League. Relegation would have meant losing around £750,000 from our income, which is a huge percentage.

“A restructuring of the club would have had to take place and a lot of difficult decisions would have had to be made.

“Included among those would have been the possible contemplation of losing our youth policy and maybe even part-time football. Things really would have been that bleak.

“Thankfully, we managed to stay up and, for that, Nigel Worthington deserves huge praise.”

Worthington was appointed by York less than 24 hours after Gary Mills had been sacked in the wake of the home defeat to Bradford City on March 2.

An 11-game winless run meant the board felt action had to be taken, hence the dismissal of a manager who in the previous 12 months had led the Minstermen to promotion and FA Trophy success.

Hicks said: “As a board, we felt something had to be done. We had been through relegation before (in 2004) so knew the signs. That is why we couldn’t let the problems continue.

“It was a difficult decision to sack the manager who had got us promoted, but one that had to be made. I would estimate around 70 per cent of fans backed the decision with the rest being against.

“But, as a board, you have to make the big calls and we felt there was no alternative. Obviously, now that people have hindsight, they say, ‘You should have done it earlier’.

“Nigel has done a fantastic job. Our survival can be traced back to his arrival.

“He turned the situation round to such an extent that only Rotherham claimed more points from the final six games than our 14. We were bottom of the form table when Nigel arrived.”

I am really pleased that it was Jason McGill who wanted this sorting before the holidays. Last year Gary Mills' tactics of just not telling the lads he didn't intend to give them a new contract, insisting they weren't the club's responsibility once their previous contract expired and therefore he didn't need to tell them was disgusting. Look at how long he kept Challinor and Moke hanging on, though at lease he did keep Challinor in the end.

Matty Blair has done enough to attract attention from other League clubs over the course of the season & has more potential than the remainder of the released players. Hope he has a change of heart & stays we will struggle to find a player with his pace, work rate & attitude.
But maybe a change over from our conference heroes is due if the club is to flourish& NW likes the game played quite differently to GM.

Hope that NW perseveres with John MacReady - injuries have prevented him breaking into the team but he looked good when he played for Darlington in the BSBP as an attacking midfielder, but agree he needs a decent pre-season. Similarly, David McDaid needs to get himself a good pre-season and try and break into the team. Can't really disagree with the retained list but like most posters, hope Matty Blair decides to sign for us and to develop his game under NW and in City colours, though it may be felt that we have the wide right position covered with Michael Coulson? Sad to see all of those players leave - even the ones who contributed little still contributed what they could, and Paddy, Kerr, Walker, Challinor etc. were instrumental in getting us promoted. They may not have been up to league standard, but in a way I'm glad they got to play a season in League 2 - they earned it. I really hope Blair signs a new contract, but can't blame him for looking around. They have such short careers (Ryan Giggs excepted) they have to take opportunities where they can. If we keep Worthington, I can see us having an ambitious season next year, so maybe that will encourage him to stay. Who knows!

Also, glad that Chambers is staying (assuming he plays out his contract). It's often said that he plays one good game in 5, but he has more innate skill than 99% of the players in this league - if NW can get better consistency from him, he'd be worth his weight in gold.

Mc Ready looked to be shaping into a decent player until he was injured for the amount of wages he will be on its worth keeping him maybe send him to Garroter to get some first team experience. Does pre season start in mid june the new season starts 2 August 2 weeks earlier than normal Keep the faith.

Only my opinion but the writing was on the wall for paddy when he was dropped for the play off final.

All the same on his day he was unplayable but that was against non league players he simply hasnt made the step up. i can see him turning out for a club like Kidderminster or Grimsby next season.

Because although I like him as a person, I feel like he really just is not good enough to be at the club, I may well be wrong and admit I like the fact he works so hard and is a very good club man, It's just the fact that I think he is a very very average player.

I disagree. He has an in-depth knowledge of the squad now that he has been here and worked with them for a couple of months ... so is in a position to make the decisions. A new manager coming in would obviously not have the knowledge required. I do really hope that NW stays ... but if he doesn't he has already done the first, and very difficult job for the next manager !

i think it said 38 in the program from dagenham
I Know there will be some GM happy clappers, but the guy lost the plot at the end of 2012.he cost the club money, can anyone tell me why he brought in 5 aside player Everson.the kid thought it was his birthday, its shows how desperate GM was he would have done better getting some locals in. and all the time PLATT was popping In on loan he brings him back and didn't play the lad,NW plays the lad and you all know how he become a future premiership player.you can poo it the facts are on the table. GM became a liability, and realy was running round in circles at the end ,and the statement he made that he wouldn't change the failing system, meant he took his own poison.most of you on here was criticle of his style of play, but you wont admit it.yes he got us up,but were 5 best and got lucky, Right o you hornets come out of you nests,

Yawn. Pock7's you've done this joke before when someone else mentioned Reeves. It may be time to update your act.

Let Blair leave his final ball isn't good enough and he can't finish. Bags of pace and effort but he's by no means a class act.

No arguments with the release list, still think Walker could've offered something but think we can get better for the wages he was on.

Parslow has been excellent all season, asked to play in different positions and rolls, not once have I hear him moan or complain, just got on with his job and for me was man of the match in many games - a true professional and a gentlemen. NW has already said, Smith, McGurk and Parslow are good professionals the type of players he can work with. If they are good enough for Nigel they are good enough for me.

Matty Blair has plenty of pace but his ability is limited. I can not see any club from higher than Division One showing any interest. But after all he is a free transfer. Matty has obviously been intent on leaving for months, thats why he has refused two improved contract offers. Some players are a bit unfortunate to be released, while others on contracts, will be lucky to make the bench. The only problem that we may find with so many new players coming in, is giving them time to gel. These cuts would not have been so severe, if Gary Mills had done his preparation better last summer.

I'm not sure about that. No two managers will agree on the style of play that works best, or on the attributes of particular players - just think what's happened at City this season - so I find it hard to believe that NW would agree to make these decisions if he didn't intend staying. I certainly hope that that's the situation anyway.

NW better stay after releasing all these players. We also need to sign some more midfielders, a replacement for Blair (who is probably going to Coventry) and a big striker. Would love to Richard Cresswell again next season.

I think many people are looking at the " conference Matty Blair". The Matty Blair of last season seen in isolation would probably be a prime candidate for release anyway. I would probably have given him another chance but I honestly don't think losing him is any great season changer. I'm confident if he stays Worthington will find better.

If the guy's been offered 2 improved contracts and turned them down then let him walk away if he thinks he can get better elsewhere. Given his form this season, when clearly struggling to make much of an impact at L2 level I would have thought that if he'd been offered a contract on the same terms that would have been generous. Bye bye Matt, thanks for helping us get out of the Conference, maybe you can help someone else get out of there. As Nigel says there is a very big step up from one division to the next and it inevitably proves too much for some.

Nigel signing on long term would be fantastic news and given his signings and a tactical nous we could look forward to next season with confidence if repeated. Would hope signings have been lined up to replace the released guys and in Nigel I trust. Please stay and take us back up to league one. Wasn't that long ago we were in playoff for championship football. We can get back there again. We won't do a Stockport. Upwards and onwards.

Matty Blair has released an emotional statement on facebook to say it looks likely he will be leaving City.

He wants to put the record straight that he was offered a contract earlier in the season but then it was withdrawn when results started to go wrong. NW had talks and made it clear that he would not offer Matty the deal and said he was free to talk to ther clubs.

Matty's message is an emotional goodbye saying he loved his time at York, the fans and the city.

You're playing it again Sam. I would have thought one year but it is no surprise both managers this year rated the guy. Our upturn came when he was used to protect the back four as he reads the game well.
McGurk getting a new contract so early is the surprise but I guess we have Tom Allen as cover. I rate McGurk when fit but his "attendance" record means that we pay about three times for every 90 minutes. The worry is that he has many different injuries although the leg injuries may be from the same source. If we can get good value in his contract great. I hope my misgivings are wide of the mark. Otherwise I think the released list is just about spot on.

Matty may well be sincere in his expression of love for the club and the fans, but how often these days do we see players beating their hearts , kissing the club badges on their shirts, and then appearing in the match programme the next week of another club professing that they've always wanted to play for them. It's easy for him to intimate he would have stayed when he hasn't been offered a new contract.
I wish Matty well in finding a new club
but I think it's good news for York that NW is looking for a higher standard of player than Matty was able to deliver this season

He certainly didn't make the same impact - but he was still one of the fastest players in the division. For me, that alone made him valuable asset. But losing him is sad, not the end of the world, and I think Worthington will sign more experienced players to fill the gaps left (assuming he stays himself, of course!).

I really hope there is an announcement soon regarding Nigel Worthington. He has already proved he can make a real difference to our club.I truly believe he can build something very special here in York and can establish our club in the Football League.
I am sure the McGills will be doing all they can to persuade Nigel to stay , he has already proved he knows what is required at this level .
I hope something is sorted out very soon to give Nigel or a new man the chance to identify and sign the players we need.

Who didn't struggle for most of last season ? When he had Adam Reed to feed him the ball quickly he then had the space to cause problems. He was an improvement on Carson once Reed and Cresswell were in the side.

looking at some of the players being released, nw could use his name and reputation to bring in some decent players here! lb- gareth roberts being released by derby, might fancy a crack at helping york possibly challenge for the play offs- depending on other recruits, although i think mid table/top half would be a good, consolodating season- and then cov have released some players, as have crawley. if worthington wants fl experience, he might as well look at the free agents list and then be able to offer bigger wages rather than paying a transfer fee as well

looking at some of the players being released, nw could use his name and reputation to bring in some decent players here! lb- gareth roberts being released by derby, might fancy a crack at helping york possibly challenge for the play offs- depending on other recruits, although i think mid table/top half would be a good, consolodating season- and then cov have released some players, as have crawley. if worthington wants fl experience, he might as well look at the free agents list and then be able to offer bigger wages rather than paying a transfer fee as well
NO NEED TO PAY FOR PLAYERS,as I have said before, there will be players begging clubs to take them on. Football is another job,too many people get carried away, sport yes,but money has taken over, and although at our level profit is unlikely to be made, the board cant keep putting money into the club,

Did anyone see this YouTube video 'ball street' with Ian Writht which discussed the bounce effect when sacking managers, they looked at York City as the example when mills was sacked and Nigel came in, they couldn't have been more wrong with their assessment!

Not keeping Matty is a big mistake, especially now knowing he would have stayed given the opportunity. A sad, sad day indeed.
What exactly did he show last season though. It's the Matty Blair conference player everyone remembers. The league player struggled for most of last season.
He certainly didn't make the same impact - but he was still one of the fastest players in the division. For me, that alone made him valuable asset. But losing him is sad, not the end of the world, and I think Worthington will sign more experienced players to fill the gaps left (assuming he stays himself, of course!).
Who didn't struggle for most of last season ? When he had Adam Reed to feed him the ball quickly he then had the space to cause problems. He was an improvement on Carson once Reed and Cresswell were in the side.
agree with you on this one, a lot of us were saying from early on in the season (even when we were playing ok ) that we just were not moving the ball quick enough and were much to slow on the break (unlike the season before ) but like you say once reed and cressie came in and pushed forward quicker it certainly help play to blair and chambers strenghts which i think definitely showed for the last part of the season
