Scoresheet search for York City ’keeper Michael Ingham

York City goalkeeper Michael Ingham York City goalkeeper Michael Ingham

YORK City goalkeeper Michael Ingham reckons he may get thrown upfield more often after almost helping his side snatch a late equaliser during Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Exeter.

After twice being told to stay between the sticks by manager Gary Mills at the weekend, Ingham got his head to a stoppage-time corner, which almost saw skipper Chris Smith convert at the far post.

Ingham insists the prime reason for his forays into the opposition penalty box is to unsettle the opposition for the benefit of his team-mates but, 385 games into his career, he also confessed he would not mind a goal next to his name before he hangs up his gloves.

The 32-year-old Irishman said: “I’ve gone up for three corners this season and I think I’ve got on the end of all three. I always go up and try to get the lads running in behind me because, for some reason, defenders never want a goalkeeper to score.

“They are always attracted to me and I try to cause a bit of havoc to get the other team’s defenders away from our lads, but the ball seems to be like a magnet to me this season. The manager stopped me going up a few times (against Exeter) but said ‘Go on then’ for the last corner.

“I got a flick to it but, unfortunately, Smudge just could not reach the ball to tap it in.

“Hopefully though, by the end of my career, I will get on the end of one and score.”

At the other end of the pitch, however, Ingham was unhappy with the two goals the team conceded at the weekend.

Alex Rodman beat him with a spectacular own goal for the first and mistakes by Scott Kerr and Jamal Fyfield contributed to the second that squirmed in under the former Northern Ireland international’s body.

The City shot-stopper admitted: “We were probably responsible for our own downfall because of the two goals we gave away.

“The first one was a great finish and possibly the best own goal I have ever conceded.

“For the second, we were just a wee bit sloppy, gave the ball away too easily and allowed their lad to get the cross in to somebody who was unmarked at the far post.

“Otherwise, I thought we played well but it’s probably been the story of our season that we haven’t got the points that our performances have deserved.”

Pointless article. No-one wants their team to be in a position that leads to their own keeper trying to score or help their teammates to score. Lets just mirror each half for our performance levels and we should be OK.
Don't want to see any new faces in January thank you very much. We should all now realise that the reality of our predicament and that means we will be finishing comfortably away from relegation but miles off a play-off place. FACT. Not too bad for a first season. We can build and improve next season.

Sorry, what? I have no idea what you're talking about, and not just because of your terrible spelling and grammar.

We need a striker to provide real competition for Walker, Reed isn't up to it. We also need a centre half to play along side McGurk. Either now or at the end of the season. Comfortably mid-table with or without new players.

I agree with this comment. Look at the mid season signings that came in last year? Terrible.

Unfortunately I fear it will be the same again. Loanee's from same division that are not good enough to get a game at their own club. And loanee's that come to York and dont even get in our starting line up (Tonne, Taylor, Swallow etc)!!

I see Craig Westcarr has had his contract at Chesterfield cancelled by "mutual consent". Worth a look ? I seemed to remember he caused us some problems. A goal every five games according the Wikipedia.

GM likely to be looking for another Back Four defender and a frontline striker, but the fact we are nine days into the window, indicates he had no-one particularly lined-up and has already said, he will not sign anyone who he considers won't improve the squad. So, reckon he will wait and see how the current squad perform at Cheltenham on Saturday and if we don't lose, then, perhaps, he will roll the dice further and wait and see how we perform against Aldershot, before any entry into the transfer/loan market! This would still give him nearly two weeks, if he then considers he needs to strengthen. COYR.

I think we will be making do with what we have already. There are no better players about at the moment that we can afford IMO.

If we spend we need to finish in a top 7 position. I think we will fall short in which case no point in making more signings. They have to be better than what we have at the club. To get in we need to off load first.

I also think that this is a nonsense item. If Michael Ingham is sent upfield for a corner, then we are obviously getting beat, and Jimmy Glass type goals are as rare as hens teeth. Michael just needs to stop them from scoring in our net, thats what he is there for. After the financial report, I am not expecting any sensational transfers into Bootham Crescent.

Agree with the above post, if Ingham did a bit better between the sticks then there would be no need for him to go up for corners. Also agree with the post that previous signings were not good enough and obviously Mr Mills must think the same !! Dont know why its a FACT that we will finish mid table, although you are probably right its clearly not a FACT. There will have to be a signing IMO if we are to consolidate this season.

The window is firmly shut and nailed, please dont open, we have good players at York a good manager and can play attractive football against anyone in this league, yes we will have off days but get behind the lads and enjoy the rest of the season. McReady and Ash and the young lads are all we need, just like TY coming back it's like having new signings, even Blanchett will play a part in this our 1st season back in the league, be positive love the City.

Kearns wanted to come back, Dont think we could pay the %age of wages required, that is why they recalled him and didnt even put him on the bench.
Fat Dick Evans at Rotherham virtually confirmed that in an interview today. Why would he go back to a small club, TOSSER (Evans).
Did we not have a recurring sell on clause for Martin Woolford who has signed for Millwall for an undisclosed fee

Chesterfield mate tells me Westcarr has been starring on loan at Walsall. Given the £50k McGill input pre xmas and subsequent talk, can't see us signing anyone of note. Believe Walker's contract is up in the summer, anyone looking for a striker for a few grand?

lord_love_rocket says...

I don't think we need to panic, as history tells us that when we do we don't bring the right sort of player in, we have a good squad now, it's just the way they're made to play that is the question for me. Regarding Walker, we could have made a large profit last season but chose not to sell, so unless we try and recoup some cash for him now someone will take him for nothing in a few months. I read that Fleetwood enquired about a straight swap for him and Parkin but I suspect he's on a large salary!

Adriano Moke released by Cambridge and Boucard sold by Luton to Notts County-do we have a sell on clause and if not why not? Port Vale( recently in financial trouble) have signed Lee Hughes and Bradford City have signed Andy Gray from leeds. Two decent strikers there.I wouldn't want Parkin back because he was lazy when with City and we missed out on Brodie who seems happy to be with Grimsby in the Conference(where we don't want to be again!.) We at City have to face reality because I suspect we could not have afforded Hughes or Gray.

robiniorocks says...

Adriano Moke has been released by Cambridge as it did not work out. Would we hae him back as cover? I liked him but I'm not sure he's up to league standards?
