New Year's Day win for the Minstermen

York City got the new year off to a flier with a 3-0 beating of Burton Albion.

The Minstermen were set on their winning way with a 13th minute penalty from Jason Walker – his seventh goal of the season.

Midfielder Paddy McLaughlin struck nine minutes before half-time, and the victory was sealed nine minutes from full-time when Matty Blair struck City’s third goal against the Brewers.

David McGurk back and two clean sheets. Coincidence?!! Great win today and hope we get a big crowd on Saturday.

Was thinking exactly the same. As a whole we played well, did brilliantly to keep the towering Zola at bay and Blair's strike rounded off a good start to 2013!

A professional performance against a half decent team, and a fully deserved result. I thought everyone was very good today, but especially Rodman, Blair and Potts in midfield - Rodman might deserve a short contract if he can replicate that performance next week. As above, McGurk was excellent, as was the much maligned C.Smith who kept a well organised defense (as well as a spectacular off-the-line clearance).

A perfect way to start the year and a nice solid performance all round.

Very enjoyable.

Really strong performance today, thought Potts was very good, Smith had a good game, made an excellent clearance and defence kept Zola pretty quiet throughout. Although not the best view from where we were stood Blairs run and goal looked excellent. All in all a really good team display though just as I dont get too out of my pram when we get beat I'm not going to get carried away.
Echo all comments welcoming McGurk back. Well played City, great start to the new year for us. Less so for their Keeper, a game he will want to forget.

Not that it matters anymore, but I see Clark Carlisle's contract has expired at City, and he has not been offered a new one at Northampton..

An excellent performance today by everyone, the defence just looks so much stronger with McGurk in it. Nice to see some flexibility up front when Rodman moved into the middle and Walker went out wide. I thought that was Rodmans best game for us. I thought Fyfield had a cracking game but I would agree with the sponsors man of the match in Paddy. The flu is just about tolerable after that but my god I'm shaking.

Entertaining match/value for money and one which we thoroughly deserved to win, as we were not going to be out-muscled and it was us who bossed the game and played the football.Plenty more of this mind-set over a full 90 minutes, and we will make our mark in this league! Couldn't really fault anyone today but after recent criticisms, credit to Chris Smith for an outstanding performance at the back, together with Dave McGurk. Exeter, Cheltenham, Gillingham - three games/results that will be a strong indicator as to whether or not we are heading towards competing for a Top Seven slot, by the end of the season! COYR.

I thought it was a good all round team performance. The third goal by Matty Blair calmed the nerves, after Burton threatened to get back into the game.

great performance, great result...a home win with a 3-0 scoreline is the classic result, another win v exeter on saturday would keep us on track for at least a mid-table finish. at the minute it looks like two of five to go down, barnet, aldershot, wimbledon, bristol rovers or plymouth. i can't see us getting dragged into that now, particularly if we give a few performances like today.

Excellent performance, especially by the defence - McGurk and C Smith absolutely outstanding. Not much humble pie left in Sainsbury's when I popped in on the way home, love it when self-styled experts are slammed down a few pegs.

Nice start to 2013. We completely bossed them throughout, I just wish we'd play like that all the time.Good to see McGurk back and I was especially happy for young Pottsy, who I've always been a fan of, he chased and harried and did him and City proud, as did the rest of the lads . Now lets continue this attitude and form and take 3 points from another play off chasing side Exeter!!!!!!!!!!

Minsterman.you might be right about matt green .my son knows him from his Bristol City days,he was highly rated around the Somerset area, but was thought too small and City let him go.
there is another lad he knows well his
name is JAMES KEANE a good striker
he is playing for IF ELFSBURG in the
top league in SWEDEN its their close
season, might be a loan there.. if you dont ask you dont get.

You're out of order... you and your ilk won't have a bad word said when we lose but when we win it's 'i told you so'.

You should go and sit with all of the Chambers lovers and cry into your half pint of strong lager.

Let's remember that Potts and McGurk are only playing because Mills' hand was forced by the departure/injuries to Kearns, Carlisle and Doig.

Mills is a very lucky man - and the fans are now getting a team that we wanted to see picked at the start of the season!

You're not a fan so don't claim to speak for them. "Norwich Union lunchbreak knobhead" I think these people are called, can't believe the moderators haven't spotted them.

Turning point of the game for me was the great double block by Chris Smith when we were two up. Good start to the new year though, three points and a clean sheet. How on earth are Burton so high up in the table? They look like a very average side.

Not from where is was standing. Brewers forwards outplayed by a strong City defence. Great start to 2013. Hope we move up the league now.

Seriously stop embarrasing yourself. You just make yourself look daft taking press rankings as gospel then coming out with that old nugget of " told you so" after a good display. Should I do the same after his next blunder ?
You're quickly gaining a reputation as the idiot of the board.

Wouldn't want to steal your crown! I see you're back after getting found out the other day, although I suppose your prediction of failure for the team last season was far more embarrassing than your comments on this more recent occasion. Hope you enjoyed yesterday's game, that's if you bothered to go of course.

Sorry but obviously I must have been mistaken when I believed that I was watching the City defenders battle really hard to hold back Burton in the second half. It must be much easier just watching one team.

Old head is correct, there was plenty of pressure on us second half and if Burton had nicked a goal it could have got very nervous. They were certainly still going for it before the third goal broke their spirit.

I think this "duffy" kid is Trigger's brother, might explain why he doesn't go to City away games as he's a season ticket holder at Anfield. Certainly explains a lot about the way he expresses himself! Ha ha ha ha.
